- "You must not allow the clones to reach the surface."
"Our new proton cannon are in the optimum position to prevent that, sir." - ―Emir Wat Tambor and TX-20
J-1 proton cannons[4] were a form of droid anti-aircraft cannon.[5] They were used by the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars against the Galactic Republic. The proton cannons were deployed by the Separatists on the planets Ryloth,[1] Geonosis,[2] and Anaxes.[6]
History
A proton cannon in Nabat
During the Confederacy of Independent Systems's occupation of Ryloth, the tactical droid, TX-20 and his battle droids set up a battery of five of these proton cannons in the city Nabat. When the Grand Army of the Republic attempted to land, the cannons were able to destroy one of the three assault ships. The cannons were then destroyed when Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi hijacked one, and proceed to fire on the others.[1] During the Second Battle of Geonosis, they were used to stop Republic forces from reaching the primary droid foundry. A proton cannon used against the Republic ships during their landing phase was taken out by BTL-B Y-wing starfighter/bombers. After their ground forces reached Point Rain, Jedi General Anakin Skywalker led his Padawan—Jedi Commander Ahsoka Tano—and clone troopers into the enemy lines, where they used Electro Magnetic Pulse grenades to take out the scanners on proton cannons. This allowed All Terrain Tactical Enforcers to enter without incident and take out the Geonosian defenses, including the proton cannons and the shield generator.[2] The cannons also saw action at the Battle of Anaxes, with dozens of them defending the Anaxes assembly complex.[6]
Behind the scenes
Proton cannons in the unfinished edition of "Unfinished Business"
The J-1 proton cannon first appeared in the opening newsreel of The Clone Wars: Season One episode "Storm Over Ryloth"[7] on February 27, 2009.[8] They then made their proper first appearance in the subsequent episode "Innocents of Ryloth"[1] on March 6 of that same year.[8] Appearing throughout The Clone Wars series,[2] they later appeared in the unfinished story reel of the episode "Unfinished Business,"[9] as well as its completed Disney+ adaptation.[6]
The J-1 proton cannon designation was first used in canon via the 2015 reference book Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know.[4] The designation was first used in Star Wars Legends within the 2011 reference book Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Incredible Vehicles, where they were identified as the J-1 semi-autonomous proton cannon.[10]
