An ion shield generator was a type of shield generator that projected an ion shield to protect starships from ion build-up inflicted by ion storms, nebulae, and ion weaponry. A deflector shield generator could be modified to also project an ion shield by installing a component into the generator. Ion shields could be configured to discharge their ionic energy when the shield overloaded, causing the ions to transfer to nearby ships.[1] In 3 ABY,[2] the Rokana Raiders used R93 refractor starfighters equipped with ion shields that allowed them to raid from the Sayma Nebula in the Khepi system of Wild Space. While escaping from the Rokana Raiders' base at the Khepi Tomb in the Sayma Nebula, Kay Vess stole an ion shield generator and later had it installed in her EML-850 light freighter, the Trailblazer.[1]

Behind the scenes

Ion shield generators first appeared in the canon continuity in the "A Pirate's Fortune" expansion for the Massive Entertainment video game Star Wars Outlaws,[1] which was released on May 15, 2025.[3] Ion shields first appeared in the Star Wars Legends in the 1996 novel Young Jedi Knights: Darkest Knight written by Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta.[4]
