- "Others, like Senator R'shinnos Sh'neel (Genassa), are reserving judgment until further developments."
- ―HoloNet News report
Genassa was a Mid Rim agriworld located in the M'shinni sector. It was the homeworld of the sentient M'shinn species, which evolved from a humanoid precursor species that had entered a symbiotic relationship with a local plant species. The M'shinni eventually colonized Genassa's moon and the rest of the Genassa system before going on to develop hyperdrive and settle worlds in other star systems at some point by 3966 BBY. By the time of the Clone Wars millennia later, Genassa had become a member world of the Galactic Republic, and it subsequently became incorporated into the territories of the Galactic Empire and the New Republic.
Description
Genassa was a terrestrial[4] planet[7] located in the Genassa system, a part of the M'shinni sector[1] in the New Territories portion of[2] the Mid Rim.[1] It was orbited by a large moon. At some point, the planet's flora included a plant species that eventually—long before the Galactic Civil War between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance—entered into a symbiotic relationship with a species of humanoid, which ultimately went extinct, evolving into the plant-covered, sentient M'shinn species.[3]
History
Joining the Republic
Genassa was the homeworld of the M'shinn species.
At some point, population pressures on Genassa forced the native M'shinn species to colonize outer space, beginning with the construction of orbital biospheres and then proceeding with the settlement of Genassa's moon and the terraforming of the rest of the Genassa system's planets. Eventually,[3] at some point by 3966 BBY,[8] the M'shinni developed hyperdrives, which allowed them to colonize hundreds of worlds in the M'shinni sector.[3]
Space surrounding Genassa was explored by the Galactic Republic between 3000 BBY and 1000 BBY,[2] and after being encountered by the Republic, the M'shinni quickly embraced that government,[3] with their homeworld being situated within the borders of the Republic by the time of the Clone Wars.[2] By the date 13:3:21, Senator R'shinnos Sh'neel represented Genassa in the Republic's Senate,[6] and during the first campaigns of the Clone Wars in 22 BBY, the Ninth Army of the Republic was tasked with engaging the military forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems in Genassa's vicinity.[5]
Empire and beyond
The planet was incorporated into the territory of the Galactic Empire by 17 BBY.[5] During the Galactic Civil War between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance, the pirate group known as the Veiled Sorority planned to attack a convoy of the criminal organization known as the Zann Consortium as part of a feud between the two groups. The ambush was supposed to take place in an isolated region of space between Genassa and the Bright Jewel sector planet Ord Mantell, where starships frequently emerged from hyperspace for navigational calculations.[4]
However, a group of individuals hired by the Zann Consortium to track down and eliminate the leader of the Veiled Sorority, the Pirate Queen, managed to obtain information about the planned attack and its coordinates. They relayed that information to the Zann Consortium, which subsequently set up an ambush of its own there.[4]
By 13 ABY, Genassa had become a part of the Empire's eventual successor state, the New Republic.[5] Fourteen years later, the Genassa system had been conquered by the extragalactic Yuuzhan Vong species as part of its invasion of the galaxy. It remained under the invaders' control until 29 ABY.[2]
Inhabitants
Genassa was an agriworld[4] that was the homeworld of the sentient M'shinn species. The M'shinni society was organized around families known as Rootlines, with each M'shinni-controlled world having a Council of the Wise that consisted of the eldest member of each Rootline on that world. The Councils of the Wise enforced ancient land ownership rules and concerned themselves with how the M'shinni society interacted with the Galactic Empire.[3] Around 25 ABY, the population of the Genassa system numbered between one and ten billion.[2]
Behind the scenes
A number of maps of the galaxy published in several Star Wars sources placed Genassa on the Celanon Spur.
Genassa was first mentioned in the 1995 West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game sourcebook Galaxy Guide 12: Aliens — Enemies and Allies, in an entry authored by Lisa Smedman.[3] The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas by Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry placed the Genassa system, and therefore the planet itself, in grid square M-7. In the book, a number of galactic maps depict Genassa between the Bright Jewel and Ottega systems on the Celanon Spur hyperspace route.[2] That placement was later repeated in several maps in other sources.[5][9][10][11][12][13]
However, in a map of The Essential Atlas focusing on Genassa's galactic region, the Mid Rim, its star system is instead placed a relatively short distance off that segment of the Celanon Spur[2]—a placement that was also repeated in the StarWars.com Online Companion to the book[14] as well as in a smaller-scale map in Jason Fry and Paul R. Urquhart's 2012 reference book The Essential Guide to Warfare focusing on Genassa's galactic neighborhood. This article assumes that the placement originating from these latter, more specific maps is correct.[5]

- ↑ Galaxy Guide 12: Aliens — Enemies and Allies establishes that the Skrillings first traveled off-world after the M'shinni had colonized their homeworld Agriworld-2079—which The Essential Atlas places in a star system other than the Genassa system. The Knights of the Old Republic Campaign Guide establishes that Jervo Thalien—whom Knights of the Old Republic 1 depicts as a Skrilling—was chairman of the off-world company Lhosan Industries by the time Taris became a member world of the Galactic Republic. Since The Essential Guide to Warfare dates the latter event to 3966 BBY, the M'shinni must have therefore acquired interstellar travel ability at some point by that date.
