"No, I've got a better idea, we're going to reset its protocols. Get it working for the rebels. Then it'll flip the reset of the Viper droids."
"That thing must have thirty thousand protocols. How are you going to wipe them?"
"Same way we sliced the slots at the Canto Grand."
"You're going to reprogram a combat droid with your Jackpot Spike?"
"I call it the Freedom Spike now. it's got some new features."
―Gedeek Obaz to Kay Vess[1]

The Freedom Spike, previously called the Jackpot Spike, was customized data spike created by Gedeek Obaz. Gedeek originally used the spike to slice slot machines at the Canto Grand casino with Kay Vess[1] sometime before 3 ABY.[2] During this time, the spike could also be used to neutralize restraining bolt while they were attached to droids. Gedeek was later arrested and forced to work with the Galactic Empire. While Gedeek was working with the Empire,[1] in 3 ABY,[2] Vess began working with ND-5, a BX-series droid commando, with a restraining bolt forcing him to remain loyal to Jaylen Vrax. Vess suggested several times to ND-5 that she could use the spike to free him from Vrax's control but ND refused to offer. Later that same year, Vess reunited with Gedeek on Akiva to recurit him for a heist but before Gedeek could leave he had Vess help him use the spike, which he had renamed to the Freedom Spike, to reprogram the Alpha Droid, a new type of Viper probe droid he had designed for the Empire. Kay Vess' crew later completed the heist, only to be betrayed by Jaylon Vrax and taken aboard the Star Destroyer Revelator. Unwhiling to leave ND-5 behind, Vess had Gedeek give her the Freedom Spike and went after ND-5 while disquised as a stormtrooper. After initially failing to use the spike on ND while on the ship's bridge. Vess lured ND to an emitter between the primary and secondary power cores for the destroyer's deflector shields which briefly stunned him. However ND reactivated before Vess could use the spike. He grabbed the spike and destroyed it however Vess managed to use her blaster to destroy the restraining bolt, ultimately freeing ND.[1]
