With JocastaBot's work archiving status articles, I began thinking about the order of templates on talk pages. Currently, the precedent is to have {{Talkheader}} at the top, then any WookieeProject templates, then templates pertaining to the article's status (eg {{GA}}, {{FormerFA}}), then the article's milestones (via {{Ahh}}, {{Ahm}}, and {{Ahf}}). After that, the actual talk page comments are made. For an example of this, see here. Additionally, other talk page templates like {{ImageVote}} are snuck in somewhere above the milestones, eg here.

Now, I don't think this system is very good. WookieeProject templates are not particularly important to the talk page, despite taking up a lot of space. On the other hand, the article's status and milestones are important, and so should logically be nearer the top, with the WookieeProject templates just above the actual discussion, since they're least relevant. Looking at Wookieepedia:Talk page policy, I released that it doesn't have much to say on the order of these templates, with rule 7 only saying the following:

  • All article talk pages containing messages should have the {{Talkheader}} template. Please do not create a talk page solely to add {{Talkheader}} and/or WookieeProject talk page templates.

I therefore propose we replace that above rule with two more (rules 7 and 8):

  • The following order should be used for article talk pages. Note that not all of these items are applicable to every talk page:
  1. {{Talkheader}}. All article talk pages should have this template.
  2. Status article talk page templates, such as {{GA}} and {{FormerFA}}. Note that only the most recent template should be used (e.g. if an article is both a former Good article and a current Featured article, only {{FA}} should be used).
  3. Article history templates ({{Ahh}}, {{Ahm}}, and {{Ahf}}). Together, these form a table with the article's milestones.
  4. Other official talk page templates, such as {{ImageVote}} and {{IDformer}}.
  5. WookieeProject templates, such as {{Ambition}} and {{WPPrideTalk}}.
  6. Talk page comments should then be made below these templates.
  • Talk pages should not be created solely to add {{Talkheader}} and/or WookieeProject templates without any discussion topics. However, talk pages may be created without discussion topics to show other templates, such as status article and article history templates.

Note that things like {{Tl|GoodOn}} and {{Tl|FeaturedBetween}} are not mentioned since the review bodies have agreed those are no longer needed, and so I plan on nominating their deletion at the upcoming Inq and ACmoots.

    • Category:WookieeProject templates also contains those Barnburner templates so I think that would make sense. Do you think it's worth specifying "WookieeProject and Barnburner templates" for space 5? Tommy-Macaroni 16:22, 25 July 2021 (UTC)

  • On a related note, sometime soon I will be looking at adding a WookieeProject field to the nomination pages, below the Comment bullet point, for optional WP declaration that Jocasta will read and use to apply the appropriate WP talk template.
