Following up on Forum:SH:Familytree usage this proposal would do three things:
- 1: Add one section listing to the suggested sections for "Group and organization articles" in the IU Layout Guide, reading:
- Family tree is an optional section that can be introduced on organization articles that are familial-type groups, including clans, flocks, and other cultural group equivalents that utilize a {{Family}} infobox. The section should implement the {{FamilyTree}} template (example: Barash Silvain's family).
- 2: Template Documentation — Add a short note on the template documentation for {{FamilyTree}} specifying it is only to be used on (the above mentioned types of articles) would also be added. This means other pages that have nothing to do with family-type or other culturally equivalent groups, such as government organizations, should use Interactive Maps instead. Per the SH, note can also be added that familytree templates can be made in the Template namespace to be translcuded onto pages if they are to be used on more than one page, for consistency, which is similar to how navboxes are transcluded instead of having the code on each page (and they can also be edited all at one time).
- 3: On the backend, use the Wikipedia Tree chart module instead of the current code of our Template:FamilyTree. Works exactly the same (and will stay named Familytree, unlike Wikipedia's), just a lot less messy than the current code, which was originally just taken from Wikipedia's now-deprecated Familytree template.
Would recommend reading the SH for a bit more of the logic behind the above; will help the backend and help some of the template transclude limit issues we've had, plus codifying this for articles that do realistically need it means family type articles' SA precedent will be codified.—spookywillowwtalk 23:35, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
