- Following Forum:CT:Copyright page overhaul, I have gone through a couple dozen or so articles that used the {{Excerpt}} template box. It's got the notoriously bulky copyright text and author+source information and was intended for use on talk page and forum discussions, rather than articles themselves, where it breaks the rule of keeping to an in-universe point of view.
- Across the mainspace, I have either replaced it with {{ExcerptIU}}, which is basically the same template without the out-of-universe information, or converted them to the standard {{Quote}} template in the case of short excerpts. The separate templates will allow us to continue keeping track of their usage via Special:WhatLinksHere.
- A few examples of the new ExceptIU template box in action can be seen on: SWTOR in-game mail from Darth Serevin, the Ballad of Cham Syndulla, and the message in Leia Organa's keepsake chest.
- To conclude the clean-up, here's a wee proposal amending how we treat excerpts with a couple quick policy additions that will codify existing usage of excerpts while keeping them consistent with the rest of our policies.
Under Wookieepedia:Layout Guide#Quotes, add the following bullet point and place it just above the last point ("For formatting rules, refer to the Quotes section of the Manual of Style"):
- "*The {{Quote}} template should be used as standard. The {{ExcerptIU}} template box should be used sparingly to accomodate lengthy quotations that are necessary to provide readers a sense of an excerpt's literary qualities or complex formatting. These could include lengthy poems and song lyrics or significant documents and speeches that are directly relevant to the article topic."
Also, given the removal of the source field, I also propose to change the bullet for excerpts under Wookieepedia:Sourcing#Exceptions from this: "Verbatim excerpts using the {{Excerpt}} template require a source, but not a separate reference" to: "Verbatim excerpts using the {{ExcerptIU}} template box requires referencing in the attribution line only."
