Alright, so I was scraping through some sources in a rework of C4-DE, and I discovered that we are wildly inconsistent with the parentheticals we use for comic series, and after some research, I discovered that our naming policy currently requires that the publisher's name be included in the parenthetical as well as the year. However, this doesn't match what we do for the actual issues—we just list the year number, and that's how the comic publishers (and retailers) list the series and issues. In fact, as the current policy reads, it says that the publisher-name rule also applies to the individual issues, and we don't do that. So, I'm proposing that we update the series-disambiguation line of the naming policy to the following:
- When two or more comic series share the same title, but began publication in different years, the year of each of the series' initial publication should be considered part of the series title, and included in a parenthetical descriptor (example: Star Wars: Doctor Aphra (2016) and Star Wars: Doctor Aphra (2020)). If a comic series name competes with a different piece of Star Wars media that was published in the same year as the series began, the comic series takes priority and should use the year parenthetical descriptor.
The only current case where one could argue there's any competition is the 1977 Marvel series, and I don't think we should prioritize a redirect to A New Hope over the proper name of the comic series. This will mean the following moves for comic series:
- Star Wars (Dark Horse Comics 2013) --> Star Wars (2013)
- Star Wars (Marvel Comics 1977) --> Star Wars (1977)
- Star Wars (Marvel Comics 2020) --> Star Wars (2020)
- Star Wars: Chewbacca (Dark Horse) --> Star Wars: Chewbacca (2000)
- Star Wars: Chewbacca (Marvel) --> Star Wars: Chewbacca (2015)
- Star Wars: Darth Maul (Dark Horse) --> Star Wars: Darth Maul (2000)
- Star Wars: Darth Maul (Marvel) --> Star Wars: Darth Maul (2017)
- Star Wars: Droids (Dark Horse 1994) --> Star Wars: Droids (1994)
- Star Wars: Droids (Dark Horse 1995) --> Star Wars: Droids (1995)
- Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (Marvel Comics 1983) --> Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983)
- Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (Marvel Comics 2023) --> Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (2023)
- Star Wars: The High Republic (Marvel Comics 2021) --> Star Wars: The High Republic (2021)
- Star Wars: The High Republic (Marvel Comics 2022) --> Star Wars: The High Republic (2022)
- Star Wars: The High Republic (Marvel Comics 2023) --> Star Wars: The High Republic (2023)
- Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures (IDW Publishing 2021) --> Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures (2021)
- Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures (Dark Horse Comics 2022) --> Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures (2022)
- Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures (Dark Horse Comics 2023) --> Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures (2023)

- With this, the series names will actually match the issues themselves. Consistency is good. Cade

- Personally I'd support making a single exception for the Star Wars series because I really do think it's misleading for readers, but it probably does make sense for the rest of series with competing titles. JediMasterMacaroni(Talk) 17:26, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
