- "What is this?"
"You've never eaten pog soup?"
"No."
"Can you appreciate the irony? Any Mandalorian worth their armor was raised on this since they were his size." - ―Din Djarin and Bo-Katan Kryze, who refers to Grogu
Pog soup was a traditional soup of the Mandalorian warrior culture that was eaten beginning at an early age. While Din Djarin—a member of the orthodox Children of the Watch Mandalorian religious sect—was recuperating above the ruins of the Civic Center of the city Sundari on the planet Mandalore after the Mandalorian Bo-Katan Kryze had rescued him from captivity by a local scavenger around 9 ABY, Kryze prepared Djarin a cup of pog soup. When she handed him the ready dish, Djarin surprised Kryze by letting her know he had never eaten it before, a situation that she found to be ironic.
Description
Pog soup was a type of soup[1] that was potable by humans.[2] It could be prepared in a cup that was heated over an open fire and could contain a powdered ingredient that was stirred into it during heating. When it was ready, the soup could be drunk from the cup.[1]
History
Bo-Katan Kryze prepared a cup of pog soup for Din Djarin (rightmost).
Pog soup was traditionally consumed by members of the mainstream Mandalorian warrior culture beginning at an early age.[1] Around 9 ABY,[3] the human Mandalorian Bo-Katan Kryze rescued Din Djarin, a human member of the Children of the Watch orthodox Mandalorian religious sect, from a scavenger[4] who had captured him in the ruins of the Civic Center[1] of the city of Sundari on the Outer Rim Territories[4] planet Mandalore in an attempt to harvest his blood.[1]
Kryze subsequently took both Djarin and his young ward, the alien foundling Grogu, to a rocky ledge overlooking the ruins and, while Djarin was regaining consciousness, prepared[1] a metal[5] cup of pog soup over a fire. While cooking the soup—with Grogu observing the process—Kryze added a powder from a pouch she carried with her and, using[1] a spoon,[5] stirred it in.[1]
Kryze eventually handed the cup of soup to Djarin, who inquired as to what it was and, to her surprise, confirmed he had never eaten the dish. As he then drank the pog soup, Kryze characterized the situation as ironic and claimed that Mandalorians "worth their armor" ate the soup from the time that they were Grogu's size. After Djarin had consumed the dish, he handed the cup to Grogu, who then peered into it, with the trio later departing the ledge.[1]

Real-world version of pog soup
Pog soup first appeared in "Chapter 18: The Mines of Mandalore,"[1] the second episode of the Disney+ television show Star Wars: The Mandalorian's third season. The episode aired on March 8, 2023.[7] For the episode, Andrée Wallin authored concept art depicting Bo-Katan Kryze preparing pog soup in a saucepan.[8]
In an article published on StarWars.com seven days after the episode's release, culinary writer Jenn Fujikawa provided a recipe for a creamy real-world version of pog soup. The recipe used bell peppers, olive oil, sweet onion, carrot, shallot, garlic, ginger, curry powder, turmeric, coriander, salt, vegetable broth, and coconut milk. The article also[6] erroneously[1] attributed to "Chapter 18: The Mines of Mandalore" the claim that Mandalorian foundlings were required to drink pog soup as a rite of passage.[6]
