- "[]One -- stop calling them «fishfaces». They don't appreciate it, []"
- ―Naradan D'ulin, to Vilmarh Grahrk
The Ootoolans were a species of amphibious sentients indigenous to the beautiful aquatic world of Ootoola. They generally possessed humanoid features, but their skin was a mottled bright green, and their heads were adorned with a fin-like ridge and several finned jowls. Due to their fish-like appearance, members of this species were derogatorily nicknamed «fishfaces» outside Ootoola.[1][2]
On their homeworld, amid water and unusual twisted rocks, the Ootoolans adapted by built their cities within the rocks.[2] One of their most significant cultural creations was the Central Palace, constructed before 4000 BBY, which served both as the main residence of the ruling leader and as a temple.[1]
During the Old Republic, their society was ruled by a theocratic patriarchal government. The ruler was expected to strictly adhere to their laws, thereby achieving a certain level of purity.[2] Around 33 BBY,[3] a group of dissenters formed the Revolutionary Purist Council and orchestrated a coup d'état, during which the reigning patriarch and his wife were executed by planted thugs.[2] The rebels then appointed a new patriarch whom they considered to be more «pure». Princess Foolookoola, daughter of the murdered monarchs, was the last heir to the throne. As she was expected to be the Purists' next target, Vilmarh Grahrk was hired by the remaining loyalists to aid in her evacuation. With his help, and that of her assistant, Naradan D'ulin, the princess escaped to Dur Sabon.[1]
