During the Imperial Era, a small battle group of the Imperial Navy of the Galactic Empire was stationed in orbit above Ilum, serving as a planetary blockade. The battle group was led by Captain Malthegn aboard the Hoplite, a Gladiator-class Star Destroyer. The battle group also consisted of several small frigates and gunboats.[1] By the time of the Galactic Civil War after the Battle of Hoth, Rebel Alliance officer and Jedi-in-training Luke Skywalker slipped past the blockade to investigate Ilum, which by then consisted of at least three Imperial-class Star Destroyers.[2]
