For other uses, see Bantha.

"In addition to the common bantha, two other species are known to exist: the diminutive dwarf bantha, which dwells in the canyons and cliffs of Tatooine’s outermost deserts, and the less furry dune bantha, which is capable of surviving in the heat (and severe drought!) of the equatorial zone."
―From the journal of Ardis San Tekka[1]

The dune bantha was a species of bantha, a type of omnivorous mammal native to the[1] Outer Rim[2] desert planet Tatooine. Dune banthas were less furry then the other two known bantha species—the non-sentient common bantha and the dwarf bantha—and lived in the equatorial region of Tatooine where they had to survive extreme heat and severe droughts. Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts Director of Creature Cartography Ardis San Tekka mentioned dune banthas in an entry on banthas in her journal[1] at some point after the Battle of Exegol in 35 ABY.[3]

Behind the scenes

In the current Star Wars canon, dune banthas were mentioned in the 2024 reference book Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. 1: Creatures of the Galaxy, which was written by S.T. Bende.[1] The species originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first mentioned in The Wildlife of Star Wars: A Field Guide, a 2001 reference book written by Terryl Whitlatch and Bob Carrau with illustrations by Whitlatch.[4] The species then appeared for the first time in the 2003 massively multiplayer online role-playing game Star Wars Galaxies, which was developed by Sony Online Entertainment.[5]
