For other uses, see Bantha.

"In addition to the common bantha, two other species are known to exist: the diminutive dwarf bantha, which dwells in the canyons and cliffs of Tatooine’s outermost deserts, and the less furry dune bantha, which is capable of surviving in the heat (and severe drought!) of the equatorial zone."
―From the journal of Ardis San Tekka[1]

The dwarf bantha was a diminutive species of bantha, a type of omnivorous mammal native to the[1] Outer Rim[2] desert planet Tatooine. Dwarf banthas lived in the canyons and cliffs of the world's outermost deserts. Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts Director of Creature Cartography Ardis San Tekka mentioned dwarf banthas in an entry on banthas in her journal[1] no earlier than 35 ABY.[3]

Behind the scenes

In the current Star Wars canon, dwarf banthas were mentioned in the 2024 reference book Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. 1: Creatures of the Galaxy, which was written by S.T. Bende.[1] The species originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first mentioned in the Galactic Phrase Book & Travel Guide written by Ben Burtt[4] and published on August 7, 2001.[5] Dwarf banthas were then pictured for the first time in The Wildlife of Star Wars: A Field Guide, a reference book written by Terryl Whitlatch and Bob Carrau, with illustrations by Whitlatch,[6] that was published in November 2001.[7] The species then appeared for the first time in the 2003 massively multiplayer online role-playing game Star Wars Galaxies, which was developed by Sony Online Entertainment.[8]
