Plot summary
Rebel medics are not able to find an antidote for the toxin threatening Ketrian Altronel, a brilliant metallurgist who has defected to the Alliance cause. Defying orders, her beloved Mak Makintay returns to Hargeeva to kidnap the Imperial who poisoned her. Mak captures Major Nial Pedrin, but will not stoop to torture to extract information from him. Pedrin bargains for his freedom in exchange for saving Ketrian's life. In truth, Pedrin does not know how to cure Ketrian, but he bluffs his way along hoping to escape later. At the Rebel base on Karatha, Mak and Pedrin discover the true cause of Ketrian's incapacitation – a rival within the Rebel medical staff has been secretly poisoning her. Pedrin realizes his deception is exposed, so he stabs Mak in a bid to flee, but is captured by Rebels. Mak and Ketrian make a full recovery.
