During the time of the Galactic Civil War, a gang of criminals known as the Desert Demons were based out of the Outer Rim Territories planet of Tatooine. Desert Demons tended to roam throughout Tatooine in groups, or operate out of small temporary encampments and settlements.[1] The gang rivaled several opposing swoop gangs,[4] and Tatooine's native Tusken Raiders were known to have produced at least one doll of a Desert Demon.[5]

In 1 ABY,[6] a group of Desert Demons assassinated Janus, the warehouse manager of Tosche Station, after his speeder bike broke down in the desert.[2] Around the same time, Desert Demons invaded the Darklighter cave, a cache used by the Darklighter family to stock supplies and equipment. Many of them were killed when spacers looking for a cargo smuggled from Tansarii Point Station assaulted the cave.[3]

Members of the Desert Demons included a number of different species of mutliple genders, including Aqualish, Bith, Bothans, Humans, Rodians, Trandoshans, Twi'leks, and Zabrak. Their memberbase comprised of bodyguards, brawlers, and marksmen, all of whom were led by a series of Desert Demon gang leaders.[1] Depending on their position, members of the gang were skilled at various forms of combat, including Teräs Käsi.[7] Members also possessed an arsenal of various weapons, including pirate weapons[8] and ranged weapons.[9] Some examples included the laser carbine and DH-17 carbine.[1]

Behind the scenes

The Desert Demons were included as a faction in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[1] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[10] They were found exclusively on Tatooine, and were designated as opponents of the Swoop Gang faction.[1] Players who completed the "Tusken Valuables" collection would receive a Desert Demon Doll as a reward.[5] The Desert Demons are also listed in all five of the Star Wars Galaxies Prima strategy guides.[8][11][9][7][12]

  6. The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
