- "Gonna have to throw together some food when we get to Tanalorr, Cal. You know, to celebrate."
"Sounds like a great idea. You have anything in mind?"
"Oh, you name it: Colo claw roe, deep-fried nuna legs, ormacheck."
"You really think you can find all that?"
"Sure!" - ―Greez Dritus and Cal Kestis
Colo claw roe were the eggs of colo claw fish that could be served as a delicacy. Small eggs in orange were served alone as colo claw caviar and also alongside a large yellow egg in a bowl. The roe also existed in green.
Description
- "If you have some extra credits, why not try some colo claw caviar."
- ―L-X1
Colo claw roe[1] were a delicacy that could be served as colo claw caviar.[3] The eggs of the colo claw fish[1] had multiple colors, including green and orange.[2]
History
An advertisement for the colo claw caviar was displayed at the Grand Arena.
In 10 BBY,[4] the leader of the crime syndicate Crimson Dawn Dryden Vos offered the smuggler Han Solo and Vos' own lieutenant Qi'ra colo craw roe, following the pair's return to Vos' flagship, the First Light, after a raid they pulled on the planet Kessel.[2]
In 9 BBY,[5] at the cantina Pyloon's Saloon, the Latero pilot Greez Dritus offered Jedi Knight Cal Kestis a handful of dishes, including the colo claw roe, deep-fried nuna legs, and ormacheck, to be prepared for a celebration once they reached the planet Tanalorr. Kestis doubted the Latero's ability to prepare the dishes, but Drituz remained confident.[1]
In 9 ABY,[6] during the competitive sporting show Hunters of the Outer Rim, the announcer droid L-X1 read out a sponsor for the colo claw caviar throughout various matches. Following the construction of the Coruscant Underworld battlefield at the Grand Arena on the planet Vespaara, an advertisement for the colo claw caviar was displayed within.[3]
Behind the scenes
Colo claw roe first appeared in the May 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story, though it was unnamed.[2] A StarWars.com blog post by Ashley Barry-Biancuzzo specified in June that the "egg-like treat" from Solo was made from colo claw fish and "like the caviar of the Star Wars universe." It was also compared to the Chinese delicacy known as the "century egg" or "thousand-year-old egg"[7]—named 皮蛋 in Chinese, it is a dark, jelly-like savoury duck, quail, or chicken egg preserved over several weeks or months in a traditional method dating from the Ming dynasty.[8] The Star Wars food was later named in video games as "colo claw roe" in 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor[1] and "colo claw caviar" in 2024's Star Wars: Hunters.[3]
