"Dathomir is a dangerous world inhabited by a number of deadly creatures, such as the chirodactyl, an apex predator."
―Darth Sidious[5]

Chirodactyls,[1] also known as Dathomirian bats,[2] were a species of winged carnivorous creatures native to the planet Dathomir.

Biology and appearance

Chirodactyls had sharp claws and teeth that they used to rip apart their prey. Their ears were triangular in shape and their wings were covered in leathery skin.[3]

History

"The strongest Nightbrothers faced a rite of passage by venturing into the lair of this creature"
―Cal Kestis[2]

The strongest Nightbrothers were tested in a rite of passage that consisted of venturing into these creatures' territory.[2]

During or before the High Republic Era, a chirodactyl threatened the people of a city. The threat posed by the ferocious beast ended when Jedi Master Barabo confronted and drove it away. A wall sculpture was made in the Jedi's honor. An image of Barabo was carved into the wall above three smaller images, depicting how the Jedi saved the city from the chirodactyl.[6]

One chirodactyl known as Gorgara was especially notorious among the natives of Dathomir.[1] In 14 BBY, Gorgara died fighting Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis when he visited the planet. Although the beast persistently tried to kill Kestis, the Jedi mourned its death.[2]

Behind the scenes

Chirodactyls first appeared in the 2019 video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, developed by Respawn Entertainment.[2] During development, inspiration for the design of the chirodactyls was found in bats and owls. Chirodactyl concept art was done by artist Jean-Francois Rey.[7]
