- "We once had a feral caniphant terrorizing the ranch, just a menace. Destroyed our barn. Twice. Caniphants cover their own tracks, see. Crafty bugger's practically impossible to find."
"So how'd you track it?"
"We reversed our vaporators, pumped the air full of moisture. When it's humid, smell gets a lot… well, more pungent. Wasn't long before we caught the scent." - ―Mosey Cimmaron and Cal Kestis
Caniphants were a crafty type of creature that covered their own tracks, making them extremely difficult to find. A feral caniphant at one point terrorized a ranch on the planet Koboh where the hunter Mosey Cimmaron and her mother lived, destroying the barn on two occasions. In order to locate the hard-to-track creature, Cimmaron and her mother reversed the ranch's moisture vaporators and filled the air with moisture. This made the caniphant's scent far more pungent, allowing them to track it.[1]
After the Jedi Knight Cal Kestis slew the unpleasant smelling mogu known as the Mire Terror[1] in 9 BBY,[2] Cimmaron told him about the caniphant that terrorized the ranch as an example of how important smell could be when hunting .[1]
Behind the scenes
In the current Star Wars canon, a caniphant was mentioned in an optional conversation available after completing the "The Mire Terror" rumor in the 2023 Respawn Entertainment video game, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.[1] The creature originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it appeared in The Game Chambers of Questal, a 1990 Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game adventure written by Paul Murphy and published by West End Games.[3]
