Bebatek pepper

Bebatek peppers were a type of pepper grown from bebatek seeds. During the High Republic Era, the father of the human child Sian Holt planted some pepper seeds in soil boxes in the alley behind their family's house. Though Holt often wished to water the plants, at one point,^[1] her^[2] father told her to let the galaxy's natural way of things take its turn. For the next three days after the conversation, rain watered the pepper seeds, and Holt's family was able to harvest a small batch of bebatek peppers a month later.^[1]

In 230 BBY,^[3] Holt—now an adult working as a detective—recounted her father's lesson about the bebatek peppers to the Jedi Master Emerick Caphtor. Caphtor attempted to relate the story to their ongoing spy work against the Nihil marauders, wondering if the operatives they had sent out were the seeds, soil, or peppers.^[1]

Behind the scenes

Bebatek peppers were mentioned in the fourth issue of the Star Wars: The High Republic: Trail of Shadows comic-book miniseries. The issue was written by Daniel José Older, published by Marvel Comics,^[1] and released on January 26, 2022^[4] as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia series' Phase I.^[5] Prior to the issue's release, a page mentioning the peppers was included in a StarWars.com preview for the issue on January 19 of that year.^[4]
