Balagash was a gas giant in the Expansion Region that was orbited by seventeen moons, including Ma'a, Rhoremone, and Balumbra. During the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, which lasted from 22 BBY to 19 BBY, battles were fought on all of Balagash's moons. In 19 BBY, Imperial Intelligence operative Haki Zeophrine accompanied Senator Bail Organa to Balumbra and noticed Balagash burning with a pustulant green light.
Description
Balagash was a gas giant[2] in the Balagash system of the Expansion Region's Hali sector. It lay in grid square 0-9 of the Standard Galactic Grid.[1] It was orbited by seventeen moons, including Ma'a, Rhoremone, and Balumbra, its eighth moon. Balagash appeared green when viewed from Balumbra.[2]
History
During the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems,[2] which lasted from 22 BBY to 19 BBY,[3] battles were fought on all seventeen of Balagash's moons.[2] In 19 BBY,[4] after the Republic was reorganized into the Galactic Empire at the end of the Clone Wars, Senator Bail Organa and Imperial Intelligence operative Haki Zeophrine traveled to Balumbra during Organa's investigation into the Empire's framing of the Jedi Order for treason. Zeophrine considered Balumbra to be the most defensible of Balagash's moons, as it was formed from metals resistant to blasting and bombarding and was sheltered by the orbits of three larger moons. As Organa and Zeophrine walked through a spaceport on Balumbra, Zeophrine noticed Balagash burning with a pustulant green light through a magnetic shield.[2]
Behind the scenes
Balagash first appeared in the 2025 novel Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear, written by Alexander Freed as the first installment of the Star Wars: Reign of the Empire trilogy.[2]

Star Wars: Edge of the Abyss on Penguin Books' official United Kingdom website (backup link) establishes the events of Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear take place thirteen years before the events of Reign of the Empire: Edge of the Abyss.
Rebecca Roanhorse (@rebeccaroanhorse) on Instagram (post): "Title and updated release date of my upcoming STAR WARS novel announced at SDCC. THE EDGE OF THE ABYSS takes place a year before Andor S1." (backup link) states that Edge of the Abyss takes place a year before the events of Andor Season 1, which are set in 5 BBY per the reasoning here. Therefore, the events of Edge of the Abyss must be set in 6 BBY, and the events of The Mask of Fear in 19 BBY.
