Bal'demnic,[6] also known simply as the Unknown Planet, was an ocean planet[1] in the Bal'demnic system in the Auril sector of the Outer Rim Territories.[2] During the later years of the High Republic Era, the planet was yet to be explored by the galaxy at large, with the star system known simply as XA-1958JHR under a Columi cataloging system.[1] By the time of the Galactic Empire, the planet had been given the proper name of Bal'demnic.[7]
The planet was the home of "the Stranger," a former Jedi turned Sith.[4] In 132 BBY,[8] Verosha Aniseya was brought to the planet by the Stranger after the Mission to Khofar during the High Republic Era.[4] The world was known for its high tides and was secluded from other planets, which in turn made it the perfect hiding spot for one to train in the arts of the dark side.[9] Darth Plagueis watched from a cave as the Stranger and Aniseya departed from the island and left the planet on the Exile II.[5]
Behind the scenes
The Unknown Planet first appeared in the live-action Disney+ television series Star Wars: The Acolyte in the episode "Lost / Found" on June 4, 2024.[10] It was first identified in the episode "Teach / Corrupt" where the label "Unknown Planet" appeared onscreen.[4] Scenes on this planet were shot on the Portuguese island of Madeira.[11] According to Leslye Headland, the planet was meant to be similar to Ahch-To.[12]
While not explicitly stated as such, the Unknown Planet resembled the planet Bal'demnic, which was featured in the Star Wars Legends novel Darth Plagueis as the site of both a cortosis mine and where the Sith Lord killed his master Darth Tenebrous. The 2025 reference book Star Wars: The Acolyte: The Visual Guide further hinted at the connection, placing the Unknown Planet in the Auril sector like Bal'demnic in the Legends continuity, and mentioning an unnamed hostile reptilian native species as a reference to the Kon'me species from Legends.[1] The October 13, 2025 update[13] to the Star Wars Galaxy Map solidified the connection, replacing the Unknown Planet label with Bal'demnic,[7] and author Jason Fry confirmed the implication that the Unknown Planet was given a proper name by the time of the Galactic Empire.[6]
