Assault on Cato Neimoidia

Prior to the Battle of Anaxes, in the final year of the Clone Wars, the 212th Attack Battalion and 501st Legion of the Republic Military undertook an assault on Cato Neimoidia.^[1] Also known as a campaign on Cato Neimoidia,^[4] the incident saw Jedi Generals Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi again teaming up^[5] as part of the effort to capture the Trade Federation's leader, Nute Gunray. The viceroy's stronghold in the western hemisphere of the planet Cato Neimoidia was marked as the prime target for the attack.^[2] While the campaign nearly ended in disaster,^[4] with Gunray indeed escaping capture and instead fleeing into the Outer Rim,^[2] the Republic was able to capture his mechno-chair, which gave the Republic's intelligence services important clues about the Sith behind the war.^[1]

Skywalker claimed to have saved Kenobi's life at some stage of the operation.^[5] The rescue came as a result of Kenobi encountering a collection of spores, which left him in an intoxicated state. Supposedly, however, the inebriated Kenobi was able to take out fifty B2-series super battle droids on his own. After the Battle of Coruscant, Skywalker made reference to a moment where he had saved Kenobi's life on Cato Neimoidia, which Kenobi disagreed with; while the recent battle and the moment in which Kenobi became intoxicated seemed to fit what both were referring to,^[3] both were actually making reference^[6] to a mission on Cato Neimoidia from much earlier in the war.^[7]

Behind the scenes

The "Anakin Skywalker" issue of Star Wars Encyclopedia stated that Skywalker claimed that he had saved Kenobi's life during the incident on Cato Neimoidia towards the end of the war,^[5] explaining Skywalker's line in Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith about saving Kenobi's life during "business on Cato Neimoidia."^[6] Within Star Wars Legends, the business was described in the Battle of Cato Neimoidia seen in James Luceno's novel Labyrinth of Evil.^[8] However, the canon novel Brotherhood by Mike Chen later featured a mission to Cato Neimoidia from much earlier in the war said to be the "business" mentioned in Revenge of the Sith.^[7] Being a large fan of Labyrinth of Evil, Chen made sure that his book did not contradict the other account, telling fans that they were free to continue to view Labyrinth of Evil as the business on Cato Neimoidia if they preferred.^[8]

The 2017 Japanese reference book Sutā Wōzu Batoru Taizen I EPISODE I・II・III had previously canonized details from the Labyrinth of Evil portrayal but stopped short of confirming the incident was what both Kenobi and Skywalker were making specific reference to in Revenge of the Sith, instead suggesting only Kenobi and Skywalker themselves could understand what was being referenced between them in that moment.^[3] As such, this article reflects the Brotherhood mission as "that business on Cato Neimoidia" based on StarWars.com describing it as such,^[7] yet this article still reflects that Skywalker claimed to have saved Kenobi in the later battle based on Chen's comments and Sutā Wōzu Batoru Taizen I EPISODE I・II・III.
