X-Wing Rogue Squadron 17 was the seventeenth issue in the Star Wars: X-Wing Rogue Squadron series of comics. It was released on April 2, 1997 by Dark Horse Comics.
Publisher's summary
Malrev IV is an uncivilized planet in a pretty, but otherwise useless, corner of the galaxy. Inhabited by vicious, unthinking brutes, it's like a living museum of pre-evolution. You wouldn't bother going there unless you had a death wish... or you were a member of Rogue Squadron and you were trying to rescue a downed cruise liner.
Plot summary
On Eiattu 6, Wedge tries to convince Plourr to join Rogue Squadron on their next mission: locating the Starfaring. Plourr politely declines, though asserts that the squadron are now honorary citizens of Eiattu 6 and are thus under her protection.
The squadron heads to the planet Malrev IV in search of the Starfarer. Dllr thinks he can hear music as they approach the planet; Wedge trusts Dllr to lead the way. Soon, the squadron are ambushed by a strange unit of TIEs, and Wedge is hit. Wedge crash lands in the forest. Meanwhile, the rest of the squadron escapes the TIEs and Dllr finds the Starfaring. Down by the Starfaring, Girov and another Bothan discuss how much of their mission to tell the Rogues.
Talking with the Bothan crew of the Starfarer, Rogue Squadron arranges with Girov for a search party to be sent out the following day in search of Wedge. While Herian tends to the system failures of the Starfaring, she discusses with Dllr the strange music he hears. Outside the Starfaring, members of Rogue Squadron admire the Bothan women dancing around the campfire. They are stared down by Bothan males across the fire. This triggers Nrin to square up to the Bothan males, leading to a fistfight between the Bothans and Rogue Squadron.
Meanwhile, Tycho Celchu awakes in shock from a memory of Grand Moff Tarkin where, after being assigned escort for Bail Organa, he revealed to Tarkin that Organa and his daughter both had ties to the Rebel Alliance. At first, Celchu blames himself for the destruction of Alderaan, before asserting it was not his fault.
As Celchu exits the Starfaring, the fight between the Bothans and Rogue Squadron is interrupted by the arrival of "the beasts" - the irrukiine - who attack with Imperial blasters. The situation looks bad for the Bothans and Rogue Squadron, as they are about to be overrun by the irrukiine's sheer numbers. This prompts Nrin to run away, apparently in cowardice.
Meanwhile, in his temple, a red Devaronian with Force powers controls the irrukiine. Stood beside him is Wedge Antilles.
