Genuinely asking here, since I'm not sure, but can we really say that the owls lived on Alderaan? IIRC Holdo just said that she was looking for them, which doesn't really mean that it could definitely be found there. Again this isn't so much an objection as a question, I'm just not sure. I think my initial decision to include it stemmed from the fact that the novel heavily establishes that Holdo researches weird stuff about the planets she goes to (and looks for interesting creatures and otherwise wherever she's at), and that Pangie's told them to be on the lookout for area-specific uniqueness to guide their way back.
