The Whelori system was located in the Southern Core portion of the Colonies.[1] It was home to the creatures known as Whelorian snake-eaters.[2][3]

Behind the scenes

The star system that was home to the Whelorian snake-eater was first introduced as the "Whelor system" in "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, How I Wonder Where We Are," a 1990 roleplaying game source article published in the thirteenth issue of the Voyages SF magazine. The article placed it in the Relgim sector and[4] erroneously[5] claimed that it was referenced in[4] the 1987[5] The Star Wars Sourcebook, published by West End Games for use with Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.[4] The article is considered noncanonical with respect to the Star Wars Legends continuity.[6] The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas, authored by Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry, subsequently named the star system "Whelori" and placed it in grid square K-13.[1]

Jason Fry initially intended for the Whelori system to be the location of the Serpent Masters[7][8] depicted in the eponymous newspaper comic strip.[9] That plan was scrapped, however, when fans on the Jedi Council Forums at TheForce.net pointed out that the world in that comic had already been named in the StarWars.com Databank as "Ophideraan," a fact that to that point had been overlooked.[7][8]

(backup link) (screenshot) Jason Fry, co-author of The Essential Atlas, stated his intention to create homeworlds for numerous species based on context implied from their names. This article treats the Whelori system as the location of one such homeworld with regard to the Whelorian snake-eater species.

Lucasfilm treats material from the various unlicensed roleplaying game magazines as non-canonical with respect to the Star Wars Legends continuity, with the only exceptions being the existence of those worlds and star systems that are referenced in The Essential Atlas and its StarWars.com Online Companion, and any other details that were referenced in, and thus canonized by, an official source.

That's one fewer error in the ATLAS -- many thanks. (I'd like to think we would have caught it when we go backwards and forwards over planet lists later, but we might not have.) ... Oh -- for the curious, there goes Whelori's claim to fame." (backup link)
