- "I just…I remember hearing stories that the Vagaari sometimes put captives in special pods on their warships' hulls to discourage counterattacks.»
«Those weren't merely stories. […] Are you thinking they may have done something similar here, with enslaved pilots' bodies wired with explosives in case of defeat so that their species couldn't be identified?" - ―Caregiver Mitth'ali'astov and Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo
The Vagaari species put their prisoners in pods located on their warships' hulls to discourage counterattacks. The pods were known to the nation of the Chiss species, the Chiss Ascendancy, in which stories of them circulated.[1] Around 18 BBY,[2] after a skirmish with several marauders' gunboats, the Chiss heavy cruiser Springhawk's crew attempted to recover body samples from the wreckage of the gunboats it destroyed; however, no remains of any body were found, which led the Springhawk's Caregiver Mitth'ali'astov to remember the Vagaari pods' stories. She then shared that with her commander, Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo, who verified the stories the caregiver had heard.[1]
Behind the scenes
The Vagaari pods were mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in the 2021 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Greater Good, the second volume of Timothy Zahn's Ascendancy Trilogy.[1] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the zero-g plastic bubbles employed by the[3] Vagaari Empire[4] as living shields first appeared in Zahn's 2004 novel Survivor's Quest and were named as such in his 2006 novel Outbound Flight.[3]
