I'm gonna work on this for a little bit. If anyone has issues, let me know. Dr. Kermit(Complain.) 00:14, February 16, 2010 (UTC)
- "This is beginning to look like an adventure. I detest adventures."
- ―DV-9 on D'vouran.
DV-9, also known as Deevee, was a research droid built by the anthropologist Mammon Hoole to function as his assistant.
Biography
Working with Hoole
D-V9 was designed by Hoole at some point prior to 0 BBY. The two traveled to Tatooine, where DV-9 recorded the call of a Krayt dragon. Later in his life, he spoke of a desire to see the dead world of Kiva that he had possessed since shortly after he was programmed.

Adventures on D'vouran
- "Zoology lessons. I have the brain capacity of a supercomputer and I'm giving zoology lessons."
- ―DV-9
After the destruction of Alderaan by the Death Star, DV-9 spent much of his time as a personal tutor for Hoole's now orphaned niece and nephew, Tash and Zak Arranda, much to his dismay.[1]
Soon after Hoole adopted the Arrandas, DV-9 and the group were ripped out of hyperspace en route to the planet D'vouran. Upon landing on the planet, they were greeted by the indigenous and seemingly friendly Enzeen, including Chood. Chood escorted the group to the local cantina, the Don't Go Inn. Once there, they were held at blaster point by Smada the Hutt, who had had a long standing grudge against Hoole. The group were saved by the timely intervention of the Heroes of Yavin. To his misfortune, DV-9 was forced to listen to the droids C-3PO and R2-D2 as they related to him their misfortunes on Tatooine, while the organics of the two groups talked.[1]
The following day, while watching over Tash as she spoke with the local "madman," Kevreb Bebo Tash suddenly ran off with him into the forest with DV-9 in tow. Bebo brought her to a secret Imperial laboratory where he tried to warn her that the disappearances on D'vouran were caused by the planet itself, but was interrupted by DV-9 and his prerecorded krayt dragon roar. After being assured that Tash was in no danger, the two left to alert Hoole about the lab, though not before Bebo gave Tash a pendant that would keep her safe from the planet.[1]
Encountering Chood and some Enzeen on their way back to town, Tash began to greet them but stopped as she watched them suck nutrients from the ground. The Enzeen spotted them and charged, Tash ran far ahead of DV-9, and he was swarmed by Enzeen and left for scrap. A sudden groundquake disrupted the planet which swallowed up most of the villagers. Tash fled to Smada's fortress, where her and the recently captured Zak were threatened with death if they did not reveal the location of Hoole. They were saved by the timely arrival of Deevee, who struggled to the fortress and startled the court with another Krayt dragon roar. The trio fled, with Smada close behind, but ultimately, all four were captured by Chood and the Enzeen, and taken to the Heart of D'vouran. DV-9 was deactivated and missed the subsequent appearance of Hoole, who had been masquerading as an Enzeen, and the ensuing battle, where both Smada and Chood fell to their deaths inside the pit, taking the pendant with them, and causing a massive disruption to the planet. After being reactivated, DV-9and the organics ran to their ship, the Lightrunner only to get trapped in the planets molten surface. They were saved by the timely arrival of the Millennium Falcon. After being tailed by the planet for some time, it devoured itself and the Falcon jumped into hyperspace.[1]
Zombie uprising on Necropolis
- "The funeral rites of Necropolis are most impressive. I wish I could attend! Unfortunately, my search for a reliable starship dealer continues. Otherwise I wouldn't miss the funeral. It should be most interesting to watch,"
"Deevee! This isn't a field trip. It's a solemn occasion." - ―DV-9 and Tash Arranda
The Heroes of Yavin dropped DV-9 and the group off at the tombworld, Necropolis, so they could purchase a replacement for the Lightrunner. Upon arriving, the group met the Master of Cerements, Pylum, and a young Necropolitan boy named Kairn. Kairn took them to a local hostel. As they arived, they found the bounty hunter Boba Fett, demanding information on the location of "Doctor" Cornelius Evazan. That night, Zak and Kairn sneaked into the graveyard. Zak encountered zombies, and while fleeing found Kairn dead of cryptberry poisoning. Evazan appeared and attacked Zak, but was quickly dispatched by Boba Fett. By that time the commotion had caused DV-9, Hoole, Tash, and a group of Necropolitans to the graveyard to investigate.[2]
The next day, instead of attending Kairns funeral, DV-9 was assigned to find a starship dealer. After the funeral DV-9 led them to Meego's Starship Emporium. As Meego pushed a flashy starship on Hoole, Zak wandered off to look at a Helix-class light interceptor, and returned breathless, claiming that he had just encountered the seemingly dead Evazan.[2]
The following day, after leaving on an excursion with Tash, Zak disappeared. DV-9 calculated the possibility of Zak's location, and found him dead, having seemingly poisoned himself with cryptberries. After the funeral, Tash managed to convince Hoole and DEV-9that Evazan may have been involved in Zak's death. While Tash and Hoole left to exhume Evazan's grave, DV-9 went to pick up the ship from Meego. Once there, Meego revealed that he had accidentally sold the ship to someone else, and suggested that he could sell Deevee another ship....for a few more credits. Deevee, knowing when he was being swindled, suggested that the Helix Interceptor was within their price range, but Meego refused, as it hadn't had its memory wiped yet. DV-9 gave a thinly veiled threat, that Hoole's Tal Nami friends would track down Meego if he swindled Hoole. Meego agreed to sell the ship, after considering the threat, and revealing to DV-9 that the ship, The Shroud, had been previously owned by Evazan. As DV-9 worked on the Shroud's computer, Meego protested that the computer hadn't been erased, but DV-9 silenced him with the promise of more credits. Delving through the memory banks, DV-9 found a file marked "REANIMATION OF DEAD TISSUE." Reading this, DV-9 came to the conclusion that Zak wasn't dead. Leaving the ship, DV-9 encountered Boba Fett, who accompanied him to the graveyard.[2]
Boba Fett opens fire on the zombies as Tash and Zak Arranda and Mammon Hoole look on.
Evazan's plans had already been set in motion, and his zombies were walking the streets. Fett and DV-9 made it to Zak's grave, and blasted him out of his coffin. Zak revealed that Evazan was hiding in the Crypt of the Ancients. DV-9 followed Fett and Zak to the crypt, but not before scooping up some boneworms, a primary ingredient in Evazan's formulas.[2]
In the crypt, they found Tash and Hoole being swarmed by zombies, including Kairn, with Evazan and Pylum controlling them. Fett opened fire on the zombies and made his way to the equipment table, where he quickly created a serum that would reverse the reanimation process. The formula was a success, but was quickly snatched by Kairn. Zak managed to appeal to Kairn's human side, and convinced him to destroy the zombies, including Evazan and, inadvertently, himself. DV-9 and Hoole created more serum, enough to stop the zombie invasion and save the planet.[2]
Plague on Gobindi
- "Tending human children. I would rather herd a shipload of Gamorrean slime cats"
- ―DV-9
After leaving Necropolis, the group went to the planet Gobindi. Zak had recently fallen ill and Hoole wanted to have him examined by his friend, Doctor Kavafi, who worked at the Mah Dala Infirmary. After Zak was settled into the hospital, Hoole ordered Deevee to take Tash to explore the city. While passing over a bridge, the duo were attacked by a blob creature, but were saved by the timely intervention of Wedge Antilles. Antilles offered to give the two a tour, but DV-9 protested, only to be ignored by Tash. As they toured, Antilles revealed that he was unable to leave Gobindi, due to a blockade. DV-9 disputed that as they had arrived. Antilles replied that only Imperials could arrive or leave, which angered Tash. Suddenly, The capture of a pirate by Imperials distracted the three, but as the excitement died down, DV-9 and Tash realized that Antilles had gone. Examining a "wanted" poster, DV-9 and Tash realized that Antilles himself was a pirate. Shocked, the two returned to the infirmary, where Zak now floated in a bacta tank. Tash opted to stay at the hospital while Hoole returned to the Shroud along with DV-9. Hoole did not stay long and instructed DV-9 to tell Tash to wait for him on the ship until he returned again.[3]
When Tash returned to the Shroud some time later, she found DV-9 working on the computers alone. DV-9 relayed Hoole's instructions, and left to check on Zak. Zak was released from the bacta tank into DV-9's care and they headed toward the ship. Upon arriving, DV-9 noted that Tash was there no longer. Zak found a trail of slime, which DV-9 identified as belonging to a blob creature. Believing that Tash may have been attacked by one, the two descend the ziggurats into the dense jungle.[3]
DV-9's ward, Tash Arranda, runs into trouble on Gobindi
Reaching the bottom, the two found themselves surrounded by blobs. As the blobs lunged forward, they were intercepted by Wedge Antilles and his rebel gang. As they fled to the ziggurats, looking for cover, DV-9 discovered a locked chamber where the Gobindi had locked up a deadly virus, as well as a cure to an infection.[3]
Shortly after they encountered Hoole, and infected Tash, and the real Dr. Kavafi, who had been captured and impersonated be the Shi'ido, Borborygmus Gog. Hoole rescued the group and they returned to the infirmary. DV-9 and Kavafi worked together to create an antidote and cured Tash.[3]
Nightmare at Hologram Fun World
After the incident on Gobindi, Hoole decided to do some independent research on Project Starscream. He left the Arrandas with Deevee on the amusement park asteroid, Hologram Fun World. Entering the park, DV-9 and the Arrandas encountered a holographic rancor before entering the Hall of Reflections where they met Lando Calrissian, a businessman interested in investing Hologram Fun World. Despite DV-9's initial hesitance, he agreed to let Calrissian tour the park with them. [4]
The next day the group toured the park. Zak entered a closed attraction, the Nightmare Machine, and came out claiming he saw Gog in a room full of equipment. Lando took them to meet Danna Fajji. Fajji assured him that all was fine, and took the group back to the Nightmare Machine. He informed them that it was an upcoming attraction that would play out an individuals worst fears. He invited Zak and Tash to go inside again, but as soon as they did, the doors locked, and Lando and DV-9 were stuck outside while Zak and Tash were unknowingly trapped in their own nightmares. Fajji told the man and the droid that there was nothing to fear, but Calrissian and DV-9 decided to break in, just as Zak and Tash broke free of the nightmare.[4]
A squad of stormtroopers had surrounded them, forcing them to surrender. Gog ordered them to take the group back to his laboratory. The shuttle that the four were placed in was ultimately hijacked by Hoole, impersonating a stormtrooper. The group returned to the Shroud and Calrissian returned to his ship, the Lady Luck. [4]
Narrow Escape on Nespis VIII
A short time later, the Shroud was on the run from four Star Destroyers, and escaped by jumping to Tattoine. Hoole took them to Jabba's Palace to meet with Jabba Desilijic Tiure. Although Jabba could not help them locate the Rebel Alliance, he offered that strange events, possibly regarding Jedi were happening in the Auril systems[5]
Hoole tried another source of information, Tash's Holonet friend, ForceFlow. Forceflow bade them come to the same coordinates Jabba offered.[5]
Landing on a mysterious space station, DV-9 confirmed that it was indeed, the Nespis VIII space station. They met Forceflow who informed them of a lost Jedi library. The library was found not long after their arrival, but any treasure hunters who found the library wound up dead, including Mangol. Their death was believed to be the work of an Anzati, and the blame fell on Dannik Jerriko, who despite actually being an Anzati and was nowhere to be found around the time of the deaths was deemed innocent. He claimed to be smoking T'bac at the time of the deaths, a fact DV-9 was able to validate.[5]
Shortly afterwards, Hoole and DV-9 notice that the Arrandas were missing. The two decided to search for them in the library. Hoole's curiosity overcame him and he opened a book which drained his life essence and caused DV-9 to shut down. Jerriko, followed shortly by the Arrandas followed came upon him and reactivated him. As Zak tried to move Hoole's body, he accidentally opened a book, removing his own life force. [5]
Tash was suddenly confronted by the Force ghost of Aiden Bok, confusing DV-9, who could not see it. She led the room, and DV-9 informed Forceflow where he could find her. Forceflow tracked her down and brought her back to the library, reassuring her that her force sensitivity would protect her. Tash sent DV-9 to recover Zak and Hoole's bodies from a morgue nearby.[5]
Zak Arranda had his life essence removed from his body on Nespis VIII
Aiden Bok manifested and convinced Tash that the library was a trap. Forceflow arrived and revealed himself to be Gog in disguise. She fled and escaped to the morgue and DV-9, where under the guidance of Bok, she prepared to send reverse the Essence Stealer and return the life essence to Zak, Hoole, and the treasure hunters. Gog caught them and fired a blaster at Tash, which was intercepted by DV-9. His sacrifice allowed Tash to reverse the essence stealer and bring back Zak, Hoole and the rest. Gog fled and fell into a pit. DV-9, despite being damaged was able to function and survived. [5]
Revalation on Kiva
On the run from the Empire, Hoole decided to end Project Starscream by making sure that everything related to the project was destroyed, setting them on a course toward the dead planet, Kiva. DV-9, who by this time had managed to repair all internal damage that blaster shot had caused, informed the Arrandas about the disaster, orchestrated by the scientist, Mammon, that had wiped the Kivans out, much to Hoole's displeasure.[6]
An automated Ion cannon struck the ship over Kiva, causing it to crash land some ways from Gog's headquarters. On the trek there, Tash, Zak and Hoole were attacked by living shadows, wraiths of the original Kivans. DV-9 managed to reprogram the automated ion cannon that shot them down and directed it toward the wraiths, which drove them off.[6]
Arriving in Gog's headquarters, the group discovered a birth chamber in which there was a one-year boy, whose could speak only one word, Eppon, which Tash and Zak took to be his name. Shortly after, Han Solo, Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca and R2-D2 and C-3PO and a squad of rebels appeared in the building, determined to stop Starscream as well.[6]
On their way back to the Rebel's ships, Rax, a Rebel commando carrying Eppon mysteriously vanished. Shortly after the group was attacked by a host of stormtroopers, led by Darth Vader. The commandos Sikes, Bergan, Tino and Meex, were ordered to take the civilians back to the transports. While doing so, It was discovered that Eppon had grown to the size of a three year old, a phenomena that DV-9 claimed was impossible. [6]
Shortly after, the group was captured by the wraiths, and accused Hoole of murder. After the rebels fended them off, Hoole left the group, stunning his droid and family. DV-9 admitted that he may have an explanation for Hoole's change in mood, but before he could explain, the rebels vanished as well, save Meex.[6]
As they hurried toward the transport, Eppon quickly aged to the size of a five year old on DV-9's back, knocking him to the ground. Upon reaching the ships, Zak and Tash were captured by wraiths, where they encountered Hoole, who admitted that he had worked with Gog, and that the destruction of Kiva was his fault. During this time, Deevee found that Eppon had grown to the a teenager. Escaping from the wraiths, the children told DV-9 about Hoole, but he admitted that R2-D2 had told him someting he obtained from the fortess database that made him suspicious. Before he could go further, Gog reappeared, and claimed Eppon as his own, calling him the first soldier of the Army of Terror. Darth Vader also appeared and engaged in a fight with Eppon, who mutated and devoured his stormtroopers. Eppon grabbed Gog and the two made their escape. Vader interrogated Zak and Tash, and his stormtroopers deactivated DV-9, and damaged his left arm and legs. As Zak repaired Deevee, he revealed that Gog was mainly to blame for the misfortune of Kiva and the Empire had deliberately harmed Hoole's reputation. They escaped from captivity, and managed to halt Hoole's execution by the wraiths.[6]
The four returned to the fortress with both Vader and the Rebels in hot pursuit. Vader was buried by an explosion and Eppon attacked the Rebels. Tash attempted to use the Force to calm Eppon, but Gog activated a bomb in his head, killing him. The room was quickly filled with wraiths, attacking Hoole. However, Deevee maged to play a video of Gog reporting to Emperor Palpatine, enraging the wraiths, and setting them on Gog, killing him.[6]
The Organic Receiving/Transmitting Pits of Lorrd
- "I believe I've had all the excitement my servos can take."
- ―DV-9
To show their gratitude for ensuring the end of Project Starscream, the Alliance offered the group a chance to repair the Shroud. Han Solo took the quartet to Lorrd where he had convinced Hart-and-Parn Gorra-Fiolla of Hart and Parn Starships to repair the ship. Busy conducting an audit on Daermor, Fiolla arranged for the group to stay with Governor Zenobia le Ingiana of Kinyov, who was both a high-ranking official and more sympathetic to the Rebellion than she was. Zak and Tash managed to uncover another Imperial plot, this time led by the Argazdan, Raygar, who had discovered a monster, created millennia ago by an extra-galactic "shaper," buried in the Slave Pits of Lorrd. The siblings escaped with the help of their new friend Kal. [7]
DV-9 postulated that the original purpose of the slave pits was to act as an ancient radio telescope. The pits then, were not used for breeding monsters, but were actually a system of organic receivers or transmitters. After this experience, Tash wrote an essay as a homework assignment titled: "Death in the Slave Pits of Lorrd, Or: What I Did On My Inter-Term Break." DV-9 was less than impressed with her essay and wrote several critical comments in it. At the end of the essay he added a small section where he revealed his intention to leave the Shroud after the group reached Koaan. He had had more excitement than he could take. As a present to Tash, he gave her essay a passing grade, but warned that Hoole would not be as lenient as him.[7]
Retirement on Koann
- "Zak, I am not programmed for philosophy, but I've seen enough to know that you and Tash are in for more excitement than my circuitry can handle. I belong here."
- ―DV-9
DV-9 retired to the Galactic Research Academy on the planet Koaan where he quickly became the assistant to the chief anthropologist, gaining access to the entire facility. At some point before 3 ABY, he received a message from Hoole, explaining that he and the Arrandas were looking for a forgotten world to take refuge on. As Hoole and his wards approached Koann, the Shroud was destroyed by Boba Fett. DV-9 greeted the trio as they exited an escape pod and led them into the facility. Hoole made the decision to take the children to Dagobah, when Deputy Strey entered the room and collapsed, stunned. The room was invaded by a strike team consisting of Platt Okeefe, Tru'eb Cholakk, and Traut who stole Hoole's data and deleted it from the database. Preparing to flee the facility, Okeefe was forced to take Hoole and the Arrandas along with her, after Hoole threatened to reveal the new planet's coordinates to the Imperial forces on the planet. As the group prepared to flee, Zak noticed that DV-9 wasn't following. Deevee explained that he was where he belonged, and that he couldn't follow. Hoole thanked his old friend for his help, and the group fled. [8]
Personality and traits
- "Deevee! He saved my life!."
- ―Tash Arranda
DV-9 was a very intelligent droid, and was quite proud to have been looked up to by his peers.[1] However, once he became a tutor to Tash and Zak, he would often grumble and complain about his position. To an outsider he seemed to resent the Arranda children, however that was not the case. He went out of his way to protect the children from numerous threats, such as saving them from Smada's fortress, rescuing Zak from being buried alive, and taking a blaster bolt meant for Tash.[1] [2] [5]
Behind the scenes
The Galaxy of Fear books continually switch the spelling for Deevee's name between "DV-9" and "D-V9," even within the same book. This article uses "DV-9" due to its being used in the most recent source.
DV-9 resembles Ralph McQuarrie's concept art for C-3PO.
