- "It wasn't my fault. It was this ring… It made me do it!"
- ―Tril Jindrax
A signet ring with the power to raise the dead and turn corpses into worker drones was part of Emperor Sheev Palpatine's private collection of relics. In 4 ABY,[2] the Sith Lord had acolytes transport the ring to the DS-2 Death Star II Mobile Battle Station aboard his personal shuttle in crates clearly labeled with the insignia of the Sith Eternal.[1]
After distracting an acolyte, Lieutenant Commander Tril Jindrax of the Imperial Engineering Corps stole the ring, hoping to use its rumored power to meet the unrealistic construction timelines imposed on the crew. In the morgue, Jindrax used the ring, which emanated swirls of bright red light, to reanimate the corpses of multiple technicians and set them to work.[1]
Although the ring raised the dead, it did not restore their living biological states. The corpses had pupil-less, yellow-green eyes, which turned red under the influence of the ring, the odor of rotting flesh, sunken cheeks, and staggering gaits. They did, however, gain a violent aggression, which was fatally taken out on technicians and other personnel. In such cases, Jindrax used the ring to reanimate the freshly deceased to join the horde. Nevertheless, as the number of drones grew, Jindrax's influence over them and the ring faded. The drones became increasingly hostile, particularly after Jindrax ordered them to slaughter fellow technician Anna Param for threatening to expose the lieutenant commander's treachery.[1]
Eventually, the sight of drones caught Darth Vader's attention, prompting his investigation. He caught them killing a Death Star Trooper, who the ring quickly reanimated, and the horde attacked Vader. The Sith quickly incapacitated numerous drones, but others attacked Jindrax in spite of his attempts to command them through the ring. Upon Vader's questioning, Jindrax claimed the ring controlled his actions, but was willing to give up the ring to Vader to return to Palpatine. The Sith took the ring and left, allowing the drones to resume their attack on Jindrax, but intending to have them continue construction efforts.[1]
