- «That gravity-well generator they brought back from Thrawn's first encounter with the Vagaari pirates was what finally persuaded the Obbic to ally with them.»
- ―Captain Roscu
Around 27 BBY,[3] the first battle between the Vagaari pirates and Chiss Ascendancy Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo, core name "Thrawn," took place in the Unknown Regions. The battle, which commenced Thrawn's[2] operations to eliminate the pirates,[1] resulted in Thrawn retrieving a Vagaari gravity-well generator. The capture of the generator persuaded the Chiss Obbic family to ally itself with the senior captain's Mitth family.[2] In 18 BBY,[4] Clarr family Captain Clarr'os'culry reminded Clarr Patriarch Rivlex of how the battle had made the Obbic ally with the Mitth.[2]
Behind the scenes
The first clash between Thrawn and the Vagaari was first mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in the 2020 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Greater Good, the second volume in Timothy Zahn's Ascendancy Trilogy.[2] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the battle of the Geroon homeworld, in which Force Commander Mitth'raw'nuruodo stole a Vagaari gravity well projector, appeared in the 2006 novel Outbound Flight, also written by Zahn.[5]
