Unidentified Dug guard

A Dug male bounty hunter served as a hired guard for a village on the Outer Rim planet Genbara two decades after the failed Sith rebellion. When the village was attacked by Bandit Troopers who followed Kouru, the guards stepped in to defend the villagers after being signaled by the chief. The Dug was piloting a modified probe droid. When the Sith killed their Trandoshan commander, the second wave of bandits killed the other rest of the guards. The Dug was also gunned down and crashed into a house.

Biography

Twenty years after the unsuccessful Sith rebellion, the Dug bounty hunter worked as a hired bodyguard to protect a village on the Outer Rim planet Genbara. The individual was part of a group of several other guards, including a Trandoshan commander, a Tusken sniper, a Gran bounty hunter, and a heavily armed protocol droid. They were hired within the context of three other nearby villages in those mountains being destroyed by what a local woodcutter described as spirits who did not accept settlers in the region. When the village was attacked by Bandit Troopers aligned with the Sith Kouru, the guards intervened to defend the villagers after the acting village chief gave the signal.^[3]

The Dug, hiding inside an empty barrel of sake^[4] with their probe droid holding multiple swords, leapt out of the barrel and controlled the droid to slice through the bandits as they made their way to the main square.^[1] A blade hung from each of probe droid's legs, whirling in a storm of slashes as its pilot howled a battle cry.^[3]

During the skirmish, both Kouru and a second wave of troopers emerged from the bandits' troop transport. Outnumbered and overpowered, the Dug and the Gran guards fled the main square under heavy fire after their Trandoshan commander was impaled by Kouru.^[1] As the former Sith known as the Ronin, who happened to be at the nearby Tono's Teahouse, walked the main street connecting the teahouse to the town square, the Dug went the opposite way, returning fire against the bandits. After some time, the Dug was located on a rooftop, before a bandit fired at the guard with a rocket launcher, causing the bounty hunter to lose control of the craft and^[1] fatally^[3] crash into a house.^[5]

Skills and abilities

The Dug bounty hunter was dextrous in the piloting of their modified probe droid, as well as using it for melee combat.^[3]

Equipment

At the skirmish on Genbara, the Dug fought wearing dark goggles and a hat, as well as a loose, draped robe with broad sleeves. The probot piloted by the Dug had its upper portion covered by a wide, circular canopy, deteriorated in places, with torn and ragged holes throughout. Eight lanterns that appeared yellow when lit hung from midsection, and two other lanterns could be found near the pilot's seat, both decorated with a circular emblem. The Dug sat inside a recessed opening above the canopy, operating control levers.^[6] Five of the drone's legs were modified to be able to hold swords and be controlled by the user.^[3]

Behind the scenes

The Dug first appeared in "The Duel," a non-canon short film released as part of the first volume of the Star Wars: Visions series, produced by Kamikaze Douga and released on Disney+^[1] on September 22, 2021.^[7] Before the short's release, the Dug was first pictured in a video uploaded to the official Star Wars YouTube channel on July 3, 2021.^[8] The character was voiced by Tasuku Kida in the original Japanese and by Adam Sietz in the English dub.^[1]

Originally designed by Takashi Okazaki,^[9] the character also appeared in the non-canon novel Ronin: A Visions Novel, written by Emma Mieko Candon^[3] and published on October 12, 2021.^[10] According to Candon, all of the bounty hunters were deliberately gendered as male.^[2] Concept art for the Dug and and the probot was included in Zack Davisson's reference book The Art of Star Wars: Visions,^[6] published on October 5, 2022.^[11] The concept art revealed Aurebesh text on the lanterns around the probot that read "OBK" and "KOKIN."^[6]
