A skilled Drabatan served as a mechanic on staff at the Resistance base^[1] on the Outer Rim planet^[2] D'Qar during the Cold War between the New Republic and the First Order. The mechanic was one of many Drabatan keeping the memories of totalitarianism by the Galactic Empire alive.^[3]

The Drabatan mechanic was mentioned alongside the Drabatan rebel commando Paodok'Draba'Takat Sap'De'Rekti Nik'Linke'Ti' Ki'Vef'Nik'NeSevef'Li'Kek in an artist's journal as part of an entry on the Drabatan species. The journal was restored, expanded, and displayed at the Graf Archive—a vast depository owned by the Graf family that contained documents that held historical importance—^[1] at some point no earlier than 34 ABY.^[4]

The Drabatan was first mentioned in the reference book Star Wars: Alien Archive written by Natalie Clubb and Katrina Pallant^[1] which was published on October 4, 2018.^[5] The non-canon animated television series LEGO Star Wars: All-Stars later identified the Drabatan mechanic as Ka-Pao. He simultaneously appeared in "Scouting for Leia" and "A Mission with Maz," both parts of the series' fourth episode^[6] which aired on December 1, 2018,^[7] where he was voiced by Fred Tatasciore.^[6]
