- ―A pilot droid before being bullied by an unruly passenger
A tram was a passenger vehicle employing repulsorlift technology for hover-based movement. Unlike typical repulsorlift vehicles, it featured a unique guidance rod system, embedded in a road-based track.[1] Trams were typically operated by RX-series pilot droids.[2]
Trams were designed with a single, unpartitioned car with an accordion joint, accommodating flexibility in motion. Their interior contained double seats arranged around a gangway, with a bench seat at the rear. In addition, they were equipped with large panoramic viewports and automatic sliding doors for ease of access. Passengers were generally required to remain seated when the tram was in motion.[1]
In the New Republic Era, trams were utilized on the planet At Attin,[1] an isolated Jewel of the Old Republic.[3] In addition, At Attin residents could use school trams, which connected a city with its suburbs, sharing traffic roads with other vehicles or using dedicated underpasses to deliver students to At Attin Middle School Gamma. Young tram commuters were notorious for disobeying the pilot's commands, with some unruly minors sticking gum to the back of[1] his[4] head.[1] Before departure, younglings would wait for their school trams at designated locations and at specific times. Running late for a tram could mean having to cover the tram's distance on one's own, an incident that happened to the human[1] schoolboy[5] Wim, who[1] around 9 ABY[6] attempted to get to school by hoverbike instead, using a non-standard detour through the woods.[1]
Behind the scenes
- "We didn't want to go so obvious as to turn it yellow. But there are very similar form languages in there and that was very specific because we didn't want to turn it into a subway car. It's a school bus, but our Star Wars version."
- ―Doug Chiang
Trams first appeared in the live-action television series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, making their in-universe debut in "This Could Be a Real Adventure,"[1] the pilot episode that was aired on Disney+ on December 2, 2024.[8] Before the two-episode premiere took place, trams were presented in several promotional clips and videos,[9][10][11] including the two trailers that were released on August 10, 2024 and November 1, 2024, respectively.[12][13]
According to co-production designer Doug Chiang, school trams presented in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew were a "Star Wars version" of American school buses. Even so, the creators decided not to introduce yellow trams so as not to make the school-bus–reference too explicit.[7] In addition, sound editor David W. Collins—a huge fan of Star Tours and Disney theme parks—mixed a sound of one of entertainment rides, which can be heard in "This Could Be a Huge Adventure" when the school tram pulls up.[14]

- ↑ Star Wars: Timelines dates the events of "Chapter 1: The Mandalorian" of The Mandalorian Season One to 9 ABY. In addition,
"A Certain Point of View" — Star Wars Insider 228 also dates "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" to nine years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, which corresponds to 9 ABY per Timelines. "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" takes place after the conflict on Mandalore, which is the main event depicted in "Chapter 23: The Spies" and "Chapter 24: The Return," the final two episodes of The Mandalorian Season Three. Therefore, Seasons One through Three of Star Wars: The Mandalorian must all be set in 9 ABY as well.
SWCA 2022: 20 Highlights from Lucasfilm's Studio Showcase on StarWars.com (backup link) states that Star Wars: Skeleton Crew takes place in the same timeframe as Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Star Wars: Ahsoka—the latter of which can also be dated to 9 ABY following the reasoning here. As such, Skeleton Crew must take place around 9 ABY as well.
