"What's the matter, Burryaga? You seem sad! Isn't doing these drawings supposed to make us happy? I mean, who are you drawing? I see…your friend Bell. But why'd you make him look so mad?"
―Toko, to Burryaga Agaburry[2]

Toko was a Togruta Jedi youngling[3] who was part of the Jedi Order during the High Republic Era.[1]

Biography

Training on Starlight

Sometime around 232 BBY,[4] the Jedi younglings Toko, Jon, and Bree were training together in the Jedi temple on Starlight Beacon. During a particular exercise, the training droid 8D-8D shared with the three younglings the possible adventures they may experience as Jedi Knights. However, the younglings quickly became afraid rather than excited. When Jedi Master Yoda became aware of their concerns, he aimed to teach them a valuable lesson on bravery with the help of of the Wookiee Padawan, Burryaga Agaburry. After hearing Agaburry's earliest memory of overcoming fear, the three younglings accompanied Yoda and Agaburry aboard a Longbeam cruiser to learn this lesson firsthand.

Toko overcoming her fears

Their first stop was to the planet Geonosis. While Bree and Jon stayed on the ship with 8D-8D, Toko accompanied Yoda and Agaburry onto the planet's surface. Toko shared with Master Yoda that she had a fear of insects explaining that she believed they were strange, scary, and that she feared they would sting. While Yoda agreed with her that the insects were strange, he explained that a Jedi Knight must find harmony with nature. By taking time to learn about the world around them, Jedi realize that what they once thought of scary could be fascinating instead.

After all three younglings had learned a personal lesson on fear and bravery, Yoda brought them to Utapau to learn one last lesson before returning to Starlight Beacon. Here in the darkness of the planet's vast caves, Yoda taught them that Jedi carry the light with them at all times. The three younglings used this philosophy to guide them through the caves and back to their Longbeam. After returning to Starlight Beacon, the younglings could rely on their new lessons when they experienced moments of fear.[1]

After the destruction of Starlight Beacon in 230 BBY,[4] the Jedi High Council called for all Jedi to return to Coruscant for their safety.[5] Toko was present in the Galactic Senate Chamber when members of the Jedi High Council announced the reimplementation of the Guardian Protocols. Bree shared with Jon and Toko her uncertainty over the announcement that Jedi younglings would begin to use real lightsabers instead of training lightsabers. However, in the weeks and months after the announcement, the three younglings commenced their lightsaber training in earnest.[6]

In 228 BBY,[7] she was present in the bottom of the Jedi Temple at the Shrine in the Depths while several Jedi were working to prevent the spread of the Blight. When the sudden surge of the infection happened, Grand Master Yoda asked her to run back to the Temple and request assistance from the other Jedi to prevent the infection from spreading.[8]
