- "On Kafrene I contacted an intelligence source of mine, Tivik, who'd proved useful in the past. Tivik has always been the nervous sort, but this time he was terrified."
- ―Cassian Andor
Tivik was a human male who served as an informant for the Alliance to Restore the Republic, operating on Jedha as one of Cassian Andor's underground contacts to the insurgent group led by Saw Gerrera. During a secret mission on the Ring of Kafrene, Tivik informed Andor of the Galactic Empire's secret superweapon, the Death Star, and was killed by Andor in the latter's attempt to escape Imperial stormtroopers.
Biography
Rebel for Gerrera
Tivik worked as an informant for the Alliance to Restore the Republic,[3] proving useful as an intelligence contact for Cassian Andor, albeit a nervous one.[4] He worked as one of Andor's underworld connections to the revolutionary Saw Gerrera's Partisan insurgents on the moon Jedha,[5] serving among the men in Gerrera's militia.[6] His sister was also based on Jedha and was loyal to her brother.[2] At some point he injured his right arm, necessitating the use of a sling[2] fashioned from a scarf.[6]
Urgent news
- "Tivik's on Kafrene until tomorrow. He'll only meet with you."
- ―Davits Draven, to Cassian Andor
Tivik was assigned to Jedha as one of Captain Cassian Jeron Andor's informants, and learned of the Imperial pilot Bodhi Rook's defection from the Empire on behalf of Galen Erso and the existence of a planet killer, the Death Star.[2] He sent Andor an oblique message, recalling him from[8] Yavin 4[7] for a rendezvous at the Ring of Kafrene, and joined a team heading to the Ring to steal ammunition.[8]
With no response from Andor, Tivik sent three total messages within a span of ten hours, urgently communicating that he had to speak with Andor and stating that he would only be available on Kafrene until the following day. Unknown to Tivik, on Yavin 4, Andor had been unsuccessfully attempting to communicate similar intelligence to Alliance High Command; the rebel Kleya Marki, who Andor had recently rescued from the planet Coruscant, had passed along information about a secret Imperial weapon involving Erso, which was connected to the Imperial kyber mining on Jedha. However, in light of Tivik's messages, General Davits Draven agreed to send Andor to meet Tivik.[7]
Rendezvous with Captain Andor
- "Hey. Calm down. Calm down. You did good—everything you told me, it's real?"
"It's real." - ―Cassian Andor and Tivik
Tivik is confronted by Cassian Andor at the Ring of Kafrene.
Tivik met with Andor in the alleyways of section nine as he was preparing to leave with his team, but Andor kept him talking until he revealed what he knew from Jedha. Tivik told him about Rook, saying that there was a cargo pilot who had defected from the Empire and was carrying a message from Erso about the superweapon. He described the weapon as a "planet-killer." Andor urgently asked if he meant Galen Erso, but Tivik did not know who Erso was.[2]
As Tivik tried to return to the Partisans, who were leaving Kafrene, they were accosted by two stormtroopers. The troopers ordered them to present their scandocs, but instead, Andor shot the pair of them. As the incident alerted more Imperial forces, Tivik fretted over his injured arm, unable to climb onto the rooftops as Andor intended.[2] Andor, knowing the Empire would capture him and interrogate the information from him,[8] decided to kill Tivik with a blaster bolt to the back. The man fell onto the ground and Andor made his escape and soon returned to Yavin 4.[2]
Legacy
- "I had a contact. One of Saw's rebels, but he's just gone missing. His sister will be looking for him."
"Sweet family."
"The temple's been destroyed but she'll be there waiting. There're enough pilgrims around to make it a decent place to hide in plain sight, use as a dead drop. We'll give her your name and hope that gets us a meeting with Saw." - ―Cassian Andor and Jyn Erso
Cassian reported back to Base One, and was debriefed by General Airen Cracken. He relayed the details of his meeting with Tivik, justifying neutralizing the man to prevent him from being taken into Imperial custody.[4] He and Galen Erso's daughter, Jyn Erso, went to Jedha soon after, intending to meet Tivik's sister who they hoped would bring them to Gerrera. According to Andor, his sister would be looking for him following his disappearance. Imperial forces prevented a meeting with Tivik's sister, though the two found their way to the Partisans anyway. Armed with Tivik's information about the Death Star, the Rebel Alliance went on to steal the battle station's plans from Scarif,[2] and ultimately formed a plan to destroy the superweapon.[9]
Personality and traits
- "It's all falling apart. Saw's right—you guys keep talking and stalling and dealing and we're on fumes out there, there're spies everywhere—"
- ―Tivik, to Cassian Andor
Tivik was a human male with a soft, round face and hard eyes. His breath carried the scent of cinnamon. He was a small man capable of making himself appear smaller to avoid suspicion.[8]
He worked as an unscrupulous source of information for the Alliance,[3] responding well to pressure, and was a true believer for the cause. Despite this, Tivik was also an abject coward who sought to escape the moral responsibilities he assigned himself, making him a maddening individual to work with. He was nervous and irritable during his meeting with Cassian Andor on the Ring of Kafrene, and became distressed while informing Andor about the "planet killer." He expressed the fear that the Rebellion was falling apart,[8] angry over how little the Alliance had done to help Saw Gerrera. He twitched throughout the meeting, looking ready to bolt at any moment,[10] and displayed even more terror than the nervousness Cassian usually knew him for.[4]
Behind the scenes
Tivik was created for the 2016 anthology film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and was portrayed by English actor Daniel Mays.[2] When Andor filled out Cassian Andor's backstory, Andor's introduction in "Kassa" sees him shoot another character, which Tony Gilroy eventually realized was similar to how Andor murdered Tivik. Gilroy was left to ponder how often Andor had carried out such acts.[11]
