Surveillance taggers were small radio transmitting beacons that were used for surveillance and tracking. Tiny and unobtrusive devices, they were launched at the target on a dart, remote, or via other clandestine means and then remained affixed through magnetic or chemical adhesive systems. The taggers broadcasted a heavily encrypted, but often short range, stream of data on the target back to the deployer, who usually needed to remain close, although more powerful models that could transmit kilometers existed.[1]
The data transmitted included a mixutre of location, range, rate, and direction of travel, altitude and other metrics that could be used to pinpoint location. These broadcasts were generally easily blocked by natural and artificial obstacles or radio and data interference, although stronger models could transmit through the densest of cities or the most rugged terrain. During the Galactic Civil War, surveillance taggers were rare and cost 175 credits.[1]
Behind the scenes
In the current Star Wars canon, surveillance taggers were mentioned in the 2018 Star Wars Roleplaying supplement Gadgets and Gear, which was published by Fantasy Flight Games.[1] The devices originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they were first mentioned in Galaxy of Intrigue, a 2010 supplement for the Star Wars Roleplaying Game published by Wizards of the Coast.[2]
