- "The Xi'Dec's planet, Stic, is a world of constant climatological, geological, and biological change. In order to survive, creatures on Stic must be highly adaptible."
- ―Obo Rin, Catalog of Intelligent Life in the Galaxy, Revised Edition
Stic was an Outer Rim Territories planet located in the Xappyh sector. It constantly underwent rapid climatic, geological, and biological changes, and is native fauna was forced to be adaptive in order to survive. Stic was home to the sentient Xi'Dec species. The Xi'Dec evolved more than 180 different sexes, a phenomenon that, after the planet was discovered by the Galactic Republic, attracted curious tourists from throughout the galaxy.
Description
- "Tourists from throughout the galaxy come to Stic, not for the planet (which is currently in an unbearably hot phase of its climatic cycle), but to gawk at the variety of Xi'Dec sexes."
- ―Obo Rin, Catalog of Intelligent Life in the Galaxy, Revised Edition
Stic was a terrestrial planet[3] located in the Stic system, a part of the Outer Rim Territories' Xappyh sector.[1] A barren world, from space it appeared gray and pockmarked with craters.[4] Stic underwent constant,[3] rapid[4] geological and biological change[3] as well as severe[4] cyclical climatic changes. The continually changing environment of the planet forced creatures living there to be highly adaptive in order to survive.[3]
History
- "Xi'Dec society was beginning to experiment with atomic fission and had begun fabricating simple computers when their homeworld was discovered by Republic scouts."
- ―Obo Rin, Catalog of Intelligent Life in the Galaxy, Revised Edition
At some point during the long and involved evolution of its complex reproductive system and methods, the Xi'Dec species of Stic developed sentience as well as a sophisticated civilization that constructed large cities.[5] The Xi'Dec were at one point involved in the conflict on Stic known as the K'rom wars, and at another time, a series of hurricanes destroyed the majority of artificial structures on the planet.[3]
When the Xi'Dec society had begun manufacturing simple computers and had begun experimenting with nuclear fission, Stic was discovered by scouts of the Galactic Republic. The sentientologist Randamar Parl subsequently established contact with the Xi'Dec, and due to the species' multitude of different sexes, he believed he had discovered a world inhabited by many sentient species. The sentientologist Obo Rin eventually included Stic, which at the time was in an unbearably hot phase of its climatic cycle, and the Xi'Dec in the Catalog of Intelligent Life in the Galaxy. In that work, Rin described the sentient species that he considered to be the most important in the galaxy and of the most interest to the Republic's successor, the Galactic Empire.[3]
Inhabitants
- "The Xi'Dec answered this challenge by evolving an incredible number of sexes."
- ―Obo Rin, Catalog of Intelligent Life in the Galaxy, Revised Edition
Stic was the homeworld of the Xi'Dec species.
Stic was the homeworld of the sentient, insectoid Xi'Dec species. In response to the challenges posed by the planet's environment, the Xi'Dec evolved more than 180 different sexes, with the most common sex, Xi'Alpha, comprising nearly six percent of Stic's population. The species evolved very rapidly in response to environmental changes, and new sexes also evolved to fill specific functional niches in Xi'Dec society. That society was based on family unit that were always comprised of members of different sexes. The political structure of the Xi'Dec society was prone to rapid change, although in general the most power was wielded by the largest and most diverse family unit.[3]
Since standardization of form was impossible due to the wide variety of body shapes exhibited by the Xi'Dec sexes, the economical system of their society did not adopt mass production. The most highly advanced Xi'Dec scientific fields were climatology, geological transformations, and biogenetics, and the corresponding specialists, which became employed by the best galactic universities, formed the principal export of Stic. Another important industry of Stic was tourism, with visitors from throughout the galaxy traveling to the planet—not to experience the world itself, but rather to marvel at the variety of the Xi'Dec sexes. The Xi'Dec sometimes mistook offworlders of other species for members of rare Xi'Dec sexes, and consequently it was not uncommon for visitors to Stic to receive hundreds of wedding proposals from the planet's natives within a few standard hours after arriving there. The Xi'Dec themselves rarely traveled to the wider galaxy.[3]
Behind the scenes
Stic was introduced in Galaxy Guide 4: Alien Races.
Stic was first mentioned in Galaxy Guide 4: Alien Races, a 1989 sourcebook authored by Troy Denning for use with West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.[5] "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, How I Wonder Where We Are," a 1990 roleplaying game source article published in the thirteenth issue of the Voyages SF magazine, placed the planet in the Almakar sector. Since that article was released outside of the Lucas Licensing process, its canonicity within the Star Wars Legends continuity was never confirmed.[6]
The 1998 video game Star Wars: Rebellion instead placed Stic in the Xappyh sector and provided the first visual depiction of the planet, an illustration that was also used for sixteen other worlds.[4] The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas subsequently placed the Stic system, and therefore the planet itself, in grid square Q-3,[2] and the StarWars.com Online Companion to the book further overrode the Voyages SF 13 placement by establishing that all of the star systems the article had placed in the Almakar sector, except for the Almakar system, were instead located in other sectors.[7]
