"The insurgent activity is primarily located in a coastal city called Spinnaker. I will position one of our Siege Dreadnoughts above the city and erase it from the map. That will take the fight out of the locals. I guarantee it."
―General Armitage Hux to Supreme Leader Kylo Ren[1]

Spinnaker was a coastal city on the planet Naboo, inhabited by the human Naboo. The city featured numerous buildings with tan-colored walls and green domed roofs. In 34 ABY, Naboo was occupied by the First Order under the direction of Supreme Leader Kylo Ren, who also sought to inspire rebellion on Naboo to challenge its people into evolving. A disguised Ren attacked a stormtrooper patrol in Spinnaker and led a resistance movement from an underground shelter, resulting in multiple attacks against First Order forces.

Spinnaker ultimately became the primary source of resistance, leading General Armitage Hux of the First Order to plan to obliterate it with a Mandator IV-class Siege Dreadnought. Ren motivated the resistance movement to attack the Siege Dreadnought with any available starships; they launched their assault as the Dreadnought took position above Spinnaker. The fighters were able to destroy one of the vessel's autocannons, and, just as the remaining cannon was about to fire on the city, Ren called off the assault on Naboo following persuasion by his cyborg guide Vaneé.

Description

Spinnaker was a major[2] coastal city on[1] on the Mid Rim[2] planet Naboo. It was inhabited by the human Naboo people and featured numerous buildings constructed along the coastline with tan-colored walls and domed green roofs. Trees also grew within many of the city's streets. Points of interest within the city included a courtyard, at least one bridge over a river, scrapyards filled with starships, and an underground shelter.[1]

History

Invasion

"Orders, sir?"
"Destroy all resistance. Any local who fights back is to be terminated with extreme prejudice."
―A First Order sergeant and an officer, in a courtyard in Spinnaker[1]

In 34 ABY,[3] Supreme Leader Kylo Ren of the fascist First Order declared himself king and launched an assault on Naboo, the homeworld of his grandmother, as part of his campaign of occupation of the galaxy. First Order TIE/sf space superiority fighters and AAL-1971/9.1 Troop Transports descended into Spinnaker, observed by an elder who identified them as heralds of an invasion to a younger peer. In orbit aboard their flagship,[1] the Resurgent-class Star Destroyer[4] Finalizer, Ren and General Armitage Hux viewed a hologram of the starships above Spinnaker while they discussed the purpose of the invasion and the Naboo's lack of resistance. Ren elected to disguise himself and pose as a resistance fighter against the First Order, hoping to challenge the people of Naboo to evolve beyond their placid nature.[1]

Within a courtyard in Spinnaker, a group of First Order stormtroopers and an Urban Assault Triped Transport (UA-TT) gathered under the command of an officer, observed by a crowd of Naboo. A stormtrooper sergeant requested orders, to which the officer identified that they would follow the standard playbook: Resistance would be terminated with extreme prejudice and local leaders would be identified and executed if they refused orders. Before enacting the orders, the sergeant was shot in the head by the incognito Ren, who used his Force powers to first fight the stormtroopers in hand to hand combat and then to telekinetically control of the UA-TT. He used the walker to fire on the remaining stormtroopers and commandered a landspeeder with which he killed the First Order officer. The stunned Naboo questioned who the anonymous warrior was and how he had overpowered the stormtroopers.[1]

Resistance

"For occupiers, there is no safe ground. Every street can become a killbox. Every bridge, an easily destroyed choke point. Every citizen, a warrior."
―Kylo Ren, covertly rallying the Naboo to attack the First Order[1]

Meeting with a crowd in an underground shelter, Ren encouraged them that the First Order was overconfident and could be defeated while dismissing reports that they had been defeated at the Battle of Crait at the hands of Galactic Resistance figures Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa. Several of the citizens questioned whether Ren would even be a damaging leader for Naboo, given that they had endured the reign of the Galactic Empire and survived. The undercover Ren insisted that the Supreme Leader would take everything from them. He continued to rally the Naboo into resistance, teaching them tactics formerly used by the Alliance to Restore the Republic against the Empire.[1]

Spinnaker became a hotspot of resistance against the First Order.

Spinnaker's citizens engaged in numerous acts of defiance, including an ambush of a stormtrooper patrol, an explosion of a UA-TT on a bridge, and the destruction of an All Terrain MegaCaliber Six using Gungan catapults, which Ren personally oversaw. Spinnaker became the primary source of rebel activity. Consequently, when Ren next contacted Hux, the general revealed that his plan was to send a Mandator IVclass Siege Dreadnought to annihilate the city, to which the Supreme Leader approved.[1]

Meeting again with insurgents underground, Ren showed them a hologram of the Siege Dreadnought above the city and announced that his plan was for the Naboo to use the available starships they had to take it down. A citizen expressed skepticism, believing that they needed to surrender before the First Order destroyed Spinnaker and millions of Naboo's population. Ren countered by arguing that the First Order needed to send a message following the Naboo's defiance and that further attacks against them was the only way to save the planet. The citizens of Naboo prepared every vessel they could find, including decades-old X-wing starfighters, N-1 starfighters, and uglies made from various ship parts.[1]

Battle for Naboo

"But hold off on the bombardment until we've dealt with them. Let the people below watch their pathetic act of defiance burn."
―General Hux, speaking of the Naboo starfighters during their attack[1]

In the Siege Dreadnought above Spinnaker, General Hux gave the order to begin the bombardment when the incoming fighters were detected. Hux subsequently changed his order to delay the strike on Spinnaker until the Dreadnought's gunners had finished off the starfighters, intending to crush the hopes of the civilians watching in the city. Ren observed the events from a hologram in the bunker and gave the signal for the insurgents to attack, after which he was interrupted by Vaneé, the cyborg who had been guiding the Supreme Leader in following the legacy of his grandfather, Darth Vader. As the Dreadnought shot down the Naboo's ships, many of them flew towards the ships underside, where it was less defended; Hux called for TIE Fighter reinforcements in response. In the shelter, Vaneé challenged Ren's motivation, believing that his attacks against his own forces were motivated by self-hatred. Ren reacted angrily, damaging the cyborg's body telekinetically and demanding the power that Vaneé had promised him. Meanwhile, the Naboo starfighters were able to destroy one of the Dreadnought's two autocannons before the arrival of the First Order's TIE Fighters.[1]

Vaneé promised Ren that he would give him the contents of a vault within Fortress Vader on[1] the planet[5] Mustafar once Ren had become worthy of Vader's legacy and let go of his need to destroy the past. Just as the Dreadnought was preparing its autocannon to fire on Spinnaker, Ren gave Hux the order to cease the attack and return to their fleet, angering the general, who nonetheless complied. A gathering of Naboo joined Ren underground to celebrate their victory and thank him, however, the Supreme Leader murdered all those present. As he left the shelter, Ren demanded that Vaneé find him an enemy who would be worth defeating, and Vaneé acknowledged to himself that he had a perfect candidate.[1]
