Sleens were a species of insect-eating lizard native to the planet Dagobah. They lived in holes in the ground and hollowed-out logs.[1] The Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker encountered a sleen in the Cave of Evil while he trained on Dagobah.[3]
Behind the scenes
Sleens, albeit unidentified, first appeared in canon via[2] the 1980 film[4] Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.[2] The lizard species was later identified as sleen in the 2015 Dorling Kindersley reference book Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know, which was written by Adam Bray, Kerrie Dougherty, Cole Horton, and Michael Kogge.[3] During production of Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, they used an asian water monitor—a specific type of monitor lizard—to depict the sleens on film.[5] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the sleens were also first introduced in the same film;[2] however, it was identified as sleen through the third expansion of the trading card game Star Wars Customizable Card Game, Dagobah Limited.[6]
