Description
The Senate Intelligence Oversight Committee served within the Galactic Republic[1] and later the Galactic Empire[2] as the oversight committee for the Galactic Senate's Bureau of Intelligence.[1]
History
Bail Organa was a member of the Senate Intelligence Oversight Committee by 19 BBY.
During the Clone Wars[1] between 22 and 19 BBY,[3] in which the Republic fought against the Confederacy of Independent Systems, the oversight committee was responsible for authorizing operations and programs of the intelligence bureau. Behind closed doors, the committee received classified briefings on the Bureau's activities from its Director Armand Isard.[1]
By 19 BBY,[4] not long after the Republic's reorganization into the Galactic Empire, Senator Bail Organa served on the committee as part of the Imperial Senate. As part of the committee, he had access to its reports, including the Sector Report on Organized Crime. While visiting the moon Jedha to investigate the purge of the Jedi Order, a Tarsunt admiral pointed out to the senator that his security clearances, as part of the Senate Intelligence Oversight Committee, were greater than his own as an admiral. Though Organa acknowledged this, he still pleaded for the admiral's help in acquiring information to prove the Jedi were framed, as Imperial Intelligence had been stalling his attempts to make investigative progress. Later, while visiting a Hivetown club in the planet Coruscant's lower levels, Organa mentally thanked the staffers who had compiled the committee's Senate Intelligence Oversight Committee.[2]
Behind the scenes
Rise of the Separatists introduced the committee into the current canon.
The Senate Intelligence Oversight Committee was first mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in Rise of the Separatists, a 2019 supplement to Fantasy Flight Games' series of Star Wars Roleplaying products.[1] It then made its first appearance in the 2025 novel Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear, written by Alexander Freed as the first installment of the Star Wars: Reign of the Empire trilogy.[2]
In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the Senate Intelligence Oversight Committee, identified as the Intelligence Oversight, was introduced in The Rebel Alliance Sourcebook, a 1990 sourcebook authored by Paul Murphy and published by West End Games for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.[5] The committee was later fully identified by name in Labyrinth of Evil, a 2005 novel written by James Luceno.[6]

Star Wars: Edge of the Abyss on Penguin Books' official United Kingdom website (backup link) establishes the events of Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear take place thirteen years before the events of Reign of the Empire: Edge of the Abyss.
Rebecca Roanhorse (@rebeccaroanhorse) on Instagram (post): "Title and updated release date of my upcoming STAR WARS novel announced at SDCC. THE EDGE OF THE ABYSS takes place a year before Andor S1." (backup link) states that Edge of the Abyss takes place a year before the events of Andor Season 1, which are set in 5 BBY per the reasoning here. Therefore, the events of Edge of the Abyss must be set in 6 BBY, and the events of The Mask of Fear in 19 BBY.
