Selnesh was an Imperial supermax prison facility,[1] located in the Selnesh system.[2] It was later used by the New Republic, where the convicted criminals Gapgrin Dozito and Sart Juloss each served 25-year sentences for attempted shipjacking. The sentence was listed on the pair's profiles, which were among a number of profiles seen by Marshal Carasynthia Dune when she searched for that of the criminal Migs Mayfeld[3] around 9 ABY.[4]
Behind the scenes
Selnesh was mentioned on a screen in "Chapter 14: The Tragedy" of Jon Favreau's Disney+ series Star Wars: The Mandalorian, directed by Robert Rodriguez[3] and released on December 4, 2020.[5] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the prison planet Selnesh first appeared in the short story "Do No Harm," written by Erin Endom which was released as part of Star Wars Adventure Journal 10 in May 1996.[6]

(backup link) (screenshot) Jason Fry, co-author of The Essential Atlas and a number of maps in the current Star Wars canon (see a list here), stated his intention to create homeworlds for numerous species based on context implied from their names. Given this principle, this article makes a similar basic assumption for Selnesh in relation to the Selnesh system.

SWCC 2019: 9 Things We Learned from The Mandalorian Panel on StarWars.com (backup link) establishes that Star Wars: The Mandalorian is set about five years after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, which Star Wars: Galactic Atlas dates to 4 ABY. Therefore, the events of "Chapter 14: The Tragedy," including the mention of Selnesh, must have taken place around 9 ABY.
