The sandfly (also spelled as sand fly or sand-fly) was a species of insect found on the planet Tatooine.[3] Sand flies could be found sitting on moisture vaporators,[3] buzzing in the cracked eaves of pourstone buildings in the town of Anchorhead,[4] and inhabiting desert caves.[2] The insects buzzed around and disturbed banthas.[1]
Behind the scenes
Sandflies were first mentioned in the 1976 Star Wars novelization.[4] The 1991 Star Wars video game manual called the insects in the game "Flying Insectoids", but a guide to the game in an issue of Nintendo Power magazine used the term "Sand Flies."[5] The sand fly was later mentioned in R. A. Salvatore's 1999 novel, The New Jedi Order: Vector Prime. It was again mentioned in the 2011 novel The Old Republic: Deceived and Riptide, both written by Paul S. Kemp.
