A salt worm was a type of worm[1] that shared its name with salt, a cooking spice.[2] When combined with kelp, the worms could be used to make protein squares. During the Eiram and E'ronoh War[1] in 382 BBY,[3] protein squares produced using the worms were distributed to Eirami citizens of the Outer Rim planet Eiram as part of ration packages. The Eirami Prince Phan-tu Zenn told Xiri A'lbaran, the Outer Rim planet E'ronoh's princess, about the contents of the bundles. As she watched the distribution continue from the royal palace's balcony, she reflected that she felt the squares would taste revolting.[1]

Salt worms were mentioned in Convergence, a 2022 novel written by Zoraida Córdova as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's Phase II.[1]
