- «No one steals from me.»
"You know, that's funny, that's what I was gonna say." - ―Jabba Desilijic Tiure and Kay Vess
The Rescue of Nix was a mission performed during 3 ABY by Kay Vess to recover Nix, a merqaal taken from Vess by the Sullustan gunslinger Hoss and sold to the Hutt Cartel. Kay Vess would be able to infiltrate Jabba's Palace and free the imprisoned merqaal from the palace menagerie, but was later intercepted by Jabba the Hutt and his forces. Along with Hoss and the Zerek Besh bounty hunter Vail Tormin, Kay Vess and Nix were ordered to be executed by massifs and later the rancor Pateesa. Though Vess, Nix, and Tormin were able to survive, they were unable to escape from the Palace. However, Jabba the Hutt was impressed by the demonstration of strength, returning Nix to Vess, alongside constraining the group to work for him in exchange for redemption.
Prelude
- "So when do we get the hell out of here?"
"Where is he?!"
"All this over that stupid little pet...Alright. My guess is it's being sold to Jabba. But you'll never—" - ―Hoss and Kay Vess
Jaylen Vrax, in an effort to recruit a gunslinger for a heist planned as part of his campaign to overtake the Zerek Besh syndicate during 3 ABY[2], suggested the Sullustan Hoss as a suitable candidate for Kay Vess and ND-5 to recruit. However, the Hutt crime lord, Jabba the Hutt, placed a large bounty on Hoss beforehand, causing the Sullustan to be captured by Tusken Raiders while attempting to hide. After Vess was able to convince the Tusken Raiders to release Hoss, Hoss informed Vess to meet him at Docking Bay 94 in Mos Eisley, but instead was preoccupied in playing Sabacc at a nearby Cantina.[1]
Defeated by an Aqualish gambler in a Sabacc game as Vess arrived, Hoss revealed to have no payment against the loss. The gambler, upon attempting to kill Hoss, noticed Nix, Kay Vess' merqaal partner-in-crime, and began to show an interest. In an effort to pay for the game, Hoss would abruptly capture and hand Nix to the gambler. Despite Vess attempting to interfer, the gambler would soon overpower Vess and proceed to sell Nix to Jabba as an exotic pet. Upon waking up, Vess would interrogate Hoss over the whereabouts of Nix, and immediately ask ND-5 for the location of Jabba's Palace after knocking out Hoss. While Vess began a desperate attempt to locate and rescue Nix from the palace, the bounty hunter Vail Tormin would find and capture Hoss, learning about Vess' intentions to break into the palace. In pursue of Vess' bounty, Tormin would attempt to deliver Hoss to Jabba in trade for Vess.[1]
The mission
- "ND-5, I found the back entrance. I'm going in."
"And if you do not come out?"
"I will."
"Don't underestimate the Hutts, Kay." - ―Kay Vess and ND-5
Kay Vess attempts to infiltrate the Palace through the exterior.
As Vess approached a cliff near the Palace, she would make her way through the guards and surrounding structures to reach a vent leading inside the Palace. After advancing pass several Gamorrean Warriors and Hutt Cartel enforcers, Vess would navigate through a ventilation system leading to the menagerie. Proceeding to take down guards alerted by the disturbance, Kay Vess was eventually able to find and free Nix from his cage. With her partner-in-crime recovered, Vess attempts to escape the Palace, and finds herself in a room with a carbon-frozen smuggler hanged as a trophy. Suddenly, Jabba the Hutt would surprise Vess with his forces and lock down the room, with Vail Tormin appearing alongside the captured Hoss.[1]
Though Jabba would soon make Vess fall into a trapdoor and be executed, Tormin catches Vess and insists for her bounty to be claimed as part of the deal. Jabba, however, declared Tormin to be executed alongside Vess and Hoss as a message against Zerek Besh, causing the bounty hunter and the chained Sullustan to all fall down the shaft. With Nix jumping in to assist Vess, the four were soon confronted by two massifs in place of the ill rancor, Pateesa. As Tormin threw Hoss towards the massifs for him to be killed and devoured, Vess and Tormin would vanquish the massifs and attempt to escape the Palace. With expertise in the structure of crime palaces, Tormin was able to navigate across the palace and defeat Hutt opposition with Vess, and eventually arrive in the hangar of the palace.[1]
Before the trio can escape from the palace, the exit sealed off to prevent the group from exiting. Soon, an interior gate would open, revealing the recovered rancor, Pateesa, sent to hunt down the group. As Vess, Tormin, and Nix evaded the rancor through hiding behind objects within the hangar, Vess would fire at explosive fuel barrels stored inside the hangar, causing the rancor to be provoked and lured to charge at the gate. The skirimish would further escalate as additional Hutt Cartel enforcers advance towards the hangars, while Tormin attempts to transit additional fuel barrels against the Rancor. Ultimately, Pateesa would be stunned as he charged towards the gate and create a gap large enough for Vess and Tormin to fit through. Nevertheless, Hutt Cartel forces would gather outside the gate to force the trio to surrender.[1]
Aftermath
- «It has been a long time since I have been so entertained. Work for me and I will let you leave Tatooine alive.»
- ―Jabba the Hutt
After Vess, Tormin, and Nix has been escorted back into the throne room, Jabba would reveal to have been pleased by the demonstration of strength, coercing the group to work for him in exchange for their lives to be spared. Along with Nix being returned to Vess, Jabba insists for Tormin and Vess to work together in infiltrating an Imperial compound containing the name of a Zerek Besh spy among the Hutt Cartel. As Tormin questions the connection between Zerek Besh and the Galactic Empire, Jabba would instead dismiss the group to cooperate and pursue the mission. Grounded by the Hutt Cartel to stay on Tatooine until the request has been fufilled, Vess, ND-5, and Jaylen Vrax would discuss the situation, with Vess later contacted by Tormin to stage their infiltration into the Imperial facility.[1]
