- "Got a droid problem?"
"Yes, my MSE-series droid won't power on anymore. I was hoping the Toymaker would be in, but the shop is closed."
"A mouse droid is pretty cheap to replace."
"But I don't want to replace Pip-Squeak! The Toymaker gave her to my son. He is… was very attached to her. She's one of the few things of his I have left." - ―Kay Vess and a mother
Pip-Squeak was a MSE series droid that was given to an Akivan child who later passed away. Following his death, Pip-Squeak stopped turning on, and in 3 ABY, the child's mother traveled to the Akivan city Myrra hoping to get her repaired by the Rodian droidsmith known as "the Toymaker," who originally gave the family Pip-Squeak.
Biography
Love and tragedy
A human mother looking to have Pip-Squeak repaired
- "All of the droid vendors are near the Hutt district. Honestly, I'm a little afraid to go there. Could you see if anyone can fix Pip-Squeak?"
- ―A mother, to Kay Vess
Pip-Squeak was a MSE series droid that was modified by the Rodian droidsmith Gedeek Obaz using non–standard parts during the reign of the Galactic Empire. At the time, Obaz was being forced to work for the Imperial Corps of Engineers on the jungle planet Akiva after being caught pulling a casino scam in the city Canto Bight on the planet Cantonica. In an effort to alleviate his guilt from working for the Empire, Obaz began gifting custom droids to Akivan children from a shop in the Artisan's Row section of Myrra, the capital city of Akiva, using the secret identity "the Toymaker". Pip-Squeak eventually became one such droid when Obaz gifted her to an Akivan child visiting his shop.[1]
The child became very attached to the droid before he eventually passed away[1] by the year 3 ABY.[2] Following his death, Pip-Squeak eventually stopped turning on, and the child's mother traveled to the Toymaker's shop hoping to find the droidsmith and have him fix Pip-Squeak, as the droid was one of the few things of her son's that she had left. However, when she arrived at the shop, she discovered that it was closed. Undeterred, she began asking passersby if they knew where the droidsmith had gone.[1]
Help from a scoundrel
- "Okay umm… I've got a friend. Well, yeah okay let's call him a friend. He can fix the droid. He's in Myrra Market."
- ―Gedeek Obaz to Kay Vess about fixing Pip-Squeak
A Quarren droidsmith that attempted to repair Pip-Squeak
While asking around near the shop, the mother was eventually approached by the human scoundrel Kay Vess. Initially, Vess suggested that the mother could just replace Pip-Squeak since that model of droid was inexpensive but then learned the sentimental value of the droid. Vess then suggested that another droidsmith could repair the droid, but the woman stated that the other droid vendors were near the Hutt Cartel District of Myrra and that she was afraid to go there. Hoping that Vess would help, she instead asked if Vess would be willing to go to the district for her and get the broken Pip-Squeak fixed. Vess accepted the droid, but made sure to not give any promises.[1]
Later on, Vess approached a Quarren droidsmith in the Hutt Cartel District to see about getting the droid fixed. During the exchange, she learned about Pip-Squeak's modifications, and the Quarren admitted that they would not be able to fix the droid. However, the Quarren was able to provide a description of "the Toymaker," which led Vess to realize that the mysterious droidsmith was actually her old friend Gedeek Obaz. She then proceeded to contract Obaz using her D4 wrist comlink. Unable to help at the moment, the droidsmith instead directed Vess to a Rodian acquaintance of his in the Market District of Myrra.[1]
Vess later visited the Market District, where she met with the Rodian. While he repaired the droid, the pair talked about Obaz's time on Akiva as "the Toymaker." When the repairs were finished, Vess returned to the mother and gave her the working droid. Grateful, the mother gave Vess a game piece for the Canto Pass game called The Claw.[1]
Characteristics
- "Mouse droid should be pretty simple. Huh. This one's been modified."
"Yeah it was modified by someone called the Toymaker."
"Ah, the Toymaker. His work is quite intricate and doesn't use standard parts. You'll have to take this back to its creator." - ―A Quarren droidsmith to Kay Vess
Pip-Squeak was a MSE series droid with black plating. She was modified using non–standard parts, making her difficult to repair except by certain droidsmiths.[1]
