Phidnas were a type of glowing parasitic insect native to the Outer Rim planet Geonosis. They were smaller and less deadly then the world's three-meter long sand snakes. Phidnas were domesticated and harvested by the native Geonosian species, who mixed phidna excretions,[1] including their dung,[2] with stone powder to make rock paste, a durable material that set as hard as rock and was used to fashion Geonosian buildings and spires. This included the brown walls of the conference room in the Stalgasin hive where the Executive Separatist Council met prior to the First Battle of Geonosis[1] in 22 BBY. Geonosis was sterilized by the Galactic Empire around 9 BBY,[3] killing all but one of its Geonosian population.[1]

In the current Star Wars canon, phidna were first mentioned in the 2015 reference book Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know.[4] The creatures originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they were first mentioned in the 2002 reference book Star Wars: Attack of the Clones: The Visual Dictionary, which was written by David West Reynolds.[5] The parasites then appeared in the 2005 LucasArts video game Star Wars: Republic Commando.[6]
