- "One of the members of Fori’s team had baked fresh finger cakes frosted with ground palm sugar."
- ―Marda Ro, in her journal
Palm sugar was a type of sugar[1] that shared its name with palm trees.[2] At some point no earlier than 379 BBY,[3] a feast was thrown aboard the starship called the Gaze Electric, which belonged to Marda Ro—the Evereni[1] founder of a group of pirates who would eventually become the Nihil.[4] An individual who was a member of Ro's organization baked finger cakes for the occasion, frosting them with ground palm sugar. During the feast, Ro nibbled on one of the finger cakes.[1]
Later, Ro mentioned palm sugar in a message[1] she[5] recorded for her descendants.[1] By 252 BBY,[6] during his youth, Ro's great-great-grandson Marchion Ro had listened to her memoirs, including the entry where the sugar was mentioned.[5]
Behind the scenes
Palm sugar appeared in a flashback in the short story "A Closed Fist Has No Claws," written by Tessa Gratton and published in the 2023 young-adult anthology The High Republic: Tales of Light and Life as a part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project.[1] In real life, palm sugar is a sweetener derived from palm trees.[7]

- ↑ The segment of "A Closed Fist Has No Claws" depicting a Jedi's death onboard the Gaze Electric takes place around 379 BBY per the reasoning here. Marda Ro met the Faers after the Jedi's death; therefore, she must have met them no earlier than 379 BBY.
