"At any rate, as you know if you've spent much time in this region, the nations here are few in number, small in size, and great in separation. The nearest relay station is controlled by the Paataatus, who never allow others to use it."
―Captain Fsir[1]

A long-range communications triad was owned and operated by the Paataatus sentient species.[1] Around 18 BBY,[2] following the liberation from a Nikardun military force of the Paataatus homeworld of Nettehi by Chiss Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo "Thrawn", the Paataatus allowed Thrawn's Chiss heavy cruiser Springhawk to use it. Shortly after, Thrawn, with information on the Vagaari pirates provided by the Prince Militaire of the Paataatus, went looking for the Vagaari across the Unknown Regions, where he encounted Watith Captain Fsir.[1]

The Watith tricked the Chiss into thinking that his freighter Saltbarrel was being attacked by evil marauders, and after the "attack" was thwarted by Thrawn, informed the Senior Captain that the Watith leaders considered the construction of a communications triad would be beneficial, as the only triad near their position was the Paataatus', which was only used by the species.[1]

Behind the scenes

The Paataatus triad transmitter was mentioned in the 2021 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Greater Good, the second volume in the Star Wars: The Ascendancy Trilogy written by Timothy Zahn.[1]
