During the Clone Wars, a pirate base operated on the moon Ostfrei in the Cularin system. Circa 21 BBY, the base was assaulted by a group of freelance agents sent by the senatorial aide Sa'arli to investigate suspicious activity on Ostfrei.

Description

The pirate base was a small facility located in a crevice on the surface of Ostfrei, a moon of the planet Genarius in the Cularin system. The settlement consisted of six cylindrical buildings to the north and west of the pirates' landing site. Two of these structures were used as quarters facilities and the other four were storage buildings that held boxes and crates of various goods.[1]

The base contained an atmospheric shield to ensure clear conditions in the immediate vicinity of the facility, though from a distance away Ostfrei's sooty atmosphere made the base hard to spot. External lighting was installed at the compound, which the pirates kept turned off except in case of trouble. One of two quarters buildings was also fitted with a base computer.[1]

A small number of pirates resided in the base, equipped with blaster weapons including blaster rifles and a single T-21 light repeating blaster. The pirates operating from the base also possessed a number of armed speeders.[1]

History

The base was founded on Ostfrei by a pirate group by the time of the Clone Wars. The base was constructed on the opposite side of Ostfrei to a secret base of the Thaereian military, an armed force chartered to defend the Cularin system, and the Thaereian facility was the only other habitation on the moon. The pirates considered their base to be the perfect location for their operations because Ostfrei was rarely visited by outsiders and because they believed that the Thaereians would never suspect that another group was operating so close to their own enclave.[1]

The pirates stationed at the base closely monitored movements at the Thaereian enclave. The pirates flew their ships in a low path when flying to their base to avoid detection and successfully concealed the existence of their operation from the Thaereian military.[1]

Circa 21 BBY,[2] the office of Lavina Wren, the Cularin system's senator received intelligence of activity on the surface of Ostfrei and Wren's aide Sa'arli hired a group of freelance agents to investigate.[1]

One of the pirates' ships fell under attack over Ostfrei from the Thaereian CR90 corvette Vigilant, but escaped and landed at the pirate base. The freelance agents sent by Sa'arli observed the vessel coming in to land and tracked down the pirate base by using a chemical scanner to follow a trail of ionized methyl and carbonyl ions that led to the pirate compound. The freelancers subsequently raided the pirate outpost and recovered from there intelligence on the presence of the Ostfrei Thaereian military base. The freelance agents then reported back to Sa'arli concerning the existence of the pirate base and Thaereian enclave.[1]

Behind the scenes

The Ostfrei pirate base appeared in the 2003 roleplaying adventure Who Goes Thaere? by Ronald A. Heintz, an instalment in RPGA's Living Force roleplaying campaign.[1]

In Who Goes Thaere? the players roleplay as the group sent to Ostfrei by Sa'arli and it is possible for the player characters to locate the pirate base either through detecting it via use of a chemical scanner or their starship's sensors. It is then possible for the player characters to attack the base and, while there, to gain intelligence regarding the Ostfrei Thaereian military enclave.[1]

If the player characters lost their starship upon landing on Ostfrei and the pirates flee the base during the attack, the freelance agents can become stranded at the pirate base. If this happens, the Thaereian miltary subsequently locate and impound the pirate outpost and transport the freelance agents away to the planet Cularin. Alternatively, if the pirates defeat the player characters, the pirates dismantle their Ostfrei base and leave.[1]

  2. The Living Force Campaign Guide states that the Living Force campaign is set one year after the Invasion of Naboo, an event that is dated to 32 BBY by The New Essential Chronology. As the Living Force adventure Below the Belt: Philology moved the campaign forward ten years to the time of the Clone Wars, Who Goes Thaere? is therefore dated to circa 21 BBY.
