- "As I said. If the Jedi are dead, what are we doing here?"
- ―Kylo Ren, to Vaneé
After the conquest of Corellia, a mission was undertaken[1] in 34 ABY[3] by Supreme Leader Kylo Ren and Vaneé to[1] the snow-covered planet[5] Lahtee in the Mid Rim Territories in search of a surviving Jedi, Grandea.[1]
Prelude
- "You are aware, Kylo Ren, that I had access to all of Lord Vader's files. They included reports from Imperial agents who detected possible Jedi activity. These became very rare in the late Empire and almost always turned out to be false. One such report arrived shortly before your grandfather's death. Vader's attention at that time was focused on…on your uncle, but if it had not been, I believe he would have investigated this case. It was… unusual."
- ―Vaneé, to Kylo Ren
While the execution of Order 66 and the subsequent enactment of the Great Jedi Purge led to the near extinction of the Jedi and the fall of the Jedi Order, the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader eventually had his duties set elsewhere, as Emperor Palpatine's grasp on the galaxy needed more attention than the hunt for any Jedi survivors. Over the years, the few rumors of survivors from the purge began to disappear, and any of those which didn't turned out to be false reports.[1]
Despite Darth Vader's best efforts during his hunt, some Jedi survived the Great Purge.
Years after the fall of the Galactic Empire, Kylo Ren, the grandson of Darth Vader and Supreme Leader of the First Order, went through many harrowing excursions across various planets with his grandfather's former servant Vaneé. Kylo Ren tried to find out more about Vader's legacy in an attempt to achieve his same level of power. Arriving on Naboo, Ren had the First Order invade the planet while also creating a small rebellion within it in secrecy. Vaneé soon came to believe that the whole conflict on Naboo was manufactured by the Supreme Leader because attacking the First Order was as close as Ren could get to attacking himself, drawing parallels between him and his grandfather.[6]
After being threatened by the Supreme Leader, Vaneé reveled to him that there was a vault on Vader's castle on Mustafar that only he could open and that Ren first needed to prove that he was a worthy heir to Vader's legacy so he could access all the power in that vault. Wanting to prove his worth, Ren ordered Vaneé to find him an enemy that would pose an actual challenge to him.[6] Vaneé used his access to Lord Vader's files to find old reports of possible Jedi activity.[1]
The mission
Meeting of light and dark
- "Their name is unknown. Perhaps you will discover it. But I have sent my own agents, and they have confirmed the details in the report. The Jedi remains."
- ―Vaneé, to Kylo Ren
Following an after-action report of the Conquest of Corellia by General Armitage Hux, Vaneé informed the Supreme Leader that he found an enemy worthy of him, a Jedi survivor. The Jedi was a survivor from Order 66 and currently resided on the Mid-Rim snow-covered planet of Lahtee.[1]
Needing to go on his hunt alone, Kylo Ren eventually found the location of the Jedi survivor on Lahtee.
Arriving on the planet, Kylo Ren expressed surprise at learning that a Jedi from the time of the Republic still lived, thinking his grandfather had slaughtered them all, but Vaneé said that despite Lord Vader trying his best, Jedi were hard to put down and ultimately the roles of Vader evolved past being a Jedi hunter, which allowed the very few Jedi still alive to survive as even the ghosts of their rumors dissipated. After telling the Supreme Leader that the last report of the Jedi's activity came shortly before Vader's death, Vaneé stopped guiding Ren, telling him that he needed to do the rest of the hunt by himself.[1]
Confident and eager to feel the thrill of the hunt, the Supreme Leader headed towards the planet's woods and, after a long walk, found a village. Entering a cantina, Ren asked the Bartender for wine and initially tried to get information out of him, but he soon became impatient and instead tried to mind probe him. While threatening him, the Supreme Leader realized that his lightsaber was being pulled away from him by someone using the Force. The individual soon revealed herself to be, Grandea, the Jedi Ren was looking for. After commenting on Ren's cracked Kyber crystal, the former Jedi urged the Supreme Leader to have a chat with her.[1]
Truth unveiled?
When Ren finally struck down Grandea, he declared that his own master, Luke Skywalker, would be the next to fall. However, Grandea's body suddenly rose into the air and began taunting him, revealing Skywalker was dead—something she had felt through the Force, yet Ren had not—and asking him who he really was. Enraged, Ren struck again at Grandea, whose body vanished while the town around Ren suddenly turned from a lively community to a decrepit ruin. Confused and enraged, Ren fell to his knees and screamed[4] before returning to the First Order.[2]
