"So the minute it gets a little hot, you run, leave your leader behind? You're the Knights of Ren. The shadow made flesh. What happened to you?"
―Tava Ren, to her knights[2]

During the First Order-Resistance War, the Knights of Ren went on a mission to raid a vault located in the cold planet of Vandor under the orders of their new leader Tava Ren.

Prelude

"I went to them, said I'd set them free if I could run their crew."
―Tava Ren, to Kylo Ren[1]

While the Knights of Ren enjoyed a time of glory under the leadership of Kylo Ren, this came to a sudden end during the assassination of a warlord, where Kylo abandoned his knights to officially join the First Order junta. Needing to survive, the knights took on a new job as muscle for the gang leader Bedat, shaking down shopkeepers for protection money.[1]

One day, the knights made a mistake during a mission and killed a person they weren't supposed to, leading Bedat to lock them up and prepare them for execution. However, the knights were rescued by one of Bedat's enforcers, Tava, who also killed Bedat and his people in the process. Her actions allowed Tava to become the new Ren and lead the knights.[1]

The Raid

"I think your faith is misplaced."
―Prior Baius, to Tava Ren[2]
The knights soon found that Tava's intel was incorrect, as the vault was guarded by an army of warrior monks.

The knights soon found that Tava's intel was incorrect, as the vault was guarded by an army of warrior monks.

The knights went on a mission where to Vandor, based on Tava's intel, they just needed to take the vault that was on said planet, which apparently had no security around. However, once they arrived they found a group of monks guarding the place, leading to a fight that ended with all but one of the monks being slaughtered by the knights. With seemingly only Prior Baius left from his group of monks, Tava Ren proceeded to boost about the knight's reputation to the Prior, but Baius rebutted by saying that their reputation was that of scoundrels that stole other people's treasures, which earned him a beating from Tava. She threatened the monk, saying that they would kill him, as they've done with so many other before him, if he didn't help them open the vault.[2]

Tava told Baius about the Ren and their belief in the shadow before threatening him again, saying that they had killed all of the monk's people. But the Prior refused as a whole army of Monks came charging into the vault, commenting how Tava's beliefs were misplaced. While Tava initially engaged the army and ordered her knights to do the same, she soon noticed that they were running to the Night Buzzard instead. Calling them cowards, Tava created an opening for herself amist the chaos and jumped out of a window, landing on the roof of the Night Buzzard as Kuruk and Vicrul discussed whether Tava survived the fight. Ordering them to start the ship via comlink, the knights dreaded having to explain their escape and disobedience.[2]

Aftermath

"Who the hell is Kylo Ren?"
"He ran the knights before you came along. Before Bedat.
"
―Tava Ren and Cardo[2]
Tava berated her knights, wondering how they could've fallen into such lows as to run away from danger.

Tava berated her knights, wondering how they could've fallen into such lows as to run away from danger.

Immediately after their failed mission, Tava proceeded to express her disappointment with the knight's actions, threatening them with her lightsaber. After realizing how afraid her knights truly were, Tava questioned them, wondering what happened to them, which prompted Ap'lek to mention Kylo Ren.[2]

Cardo told Tava the story of their time with Kylo and how they were betrayed by him in favor of Snoke and the First Order, leading to them meeting her. This explanation motivated Tava Ren to confront the Supreme Leader at his own ship the Finalizer,[2] leading to a duel between the two dark side wielders before a brief attempt at a truce was made. An attempt that failed and ended with Tava narrowly escaping the First Order.[1]

The series also features the Finalizer as the First Order's flagship. As Star Wars Encyclopedia: The Comprehensive Guide to the Star Wars Galaxy establishes that the Steadfast became the First Order's flagship following the Battle of Batuu, dated to 34 ABY by Timelines, the events of Legacy of Vader must be set in that year.
